Computer Idiot!

Quick question - I have an older Dell that I'm giving to my little nephew so he can learn how to download porn at a ripe age. My question is, it currently has the old Windows 95 on it and I want to install XP. If I have a disk from work that came with one of the desktops, is the only thing I need to do is drop it in the drive, turn the comp on and it'll take over?? Anyone know how long this process is? Mucho K

all i know is it can be a pain in the ass if you dont know what your doing. it takes a good amount of time. have the cousin do it.

What is the size of the Hard Drive on the old machine.

XP takes a gig of space and it is recommended that you have at least a 40 gig hd in the box.

It is a pretty easy process, but you still need to configure it (like the language settings etc). The XP setup CD takes you through the process pretty nicely. Just drop the CD in the drive and switch the machine on. You will probably need to either repartition the drive, and/or you'll need to upgrade to NTFS partition type as the comp is Win95.

You will need to make sure that your old dell can handle it though. XP needs lots of HD space, plus more memory than your dell has.

If your old dell is REALLY old then you may have additional problems, such as a non-bootable CD or incompatible hardware.

Assuming the hardware can handle it, it's actually pretty difficult to screw it up.

Not sure as I'm in the office right now.......what if I run a XP reinstallation disk that came with one of our comps here...wouldnt that just overwrite everything? Still think it doesnt have enough mem? Will I run into a registering process if it's already registered to a comp here or can I skip that step? Should I just put windows 98 on it?

Dell scares most of my friends. If you put in the XP disc there will be an option to run some sort of evaluation or system compatablitiy. That should give you your answer.

A system with WIN95 is probably under powered for any version of XP.

like mentioned above..if it cames with windows 95 on it, ...im sure its a rather slow system and couldnt handle XP... i would hate to install 98 though, that operating system is garbage Find out the specs of the computer....if its atleast 400-500mhz you could add some memory and possibly run Xp or maybe windows 2000 instead. Also , you could run the cd while windows 95 is started and it will ask you if you want to run the "compatibility wizard" , that wizard will tell you if the hardware in your system is compatible .As far as installing, its pretty straight forward, insert the disk, make sure your comp is set to boot from the "cd-rom" , you can check that in the Bios. IF not you;ll just need to make a boot-floopy. once you got the cd-running, you would want to delete the partition , (it tells you what to do ) and create a new partition and install windows on that new partition.

This man knows that I know that he knows what we all know and that's all there is to know - you know?

I dont want to put too much dough into this thing.....itll be used for internet use only...mabe some games........so would '98 be sufficient? I needed to put an ethernet phone jack in the motherboard, so 95 wont work........needs at least 98.......will this work?

I would install 98. I would also format it first and that would solve all the isses here, apart from the fact that you need to know how to format it, it sounds like you actually might need to format it.

Is that it?

or do i need to format it in dos???

I can't remember, but I would format the drive and kill any partitions then try the clean install.

Much Luck.

I guess thats problem......right now, its has no internet access.........so, can I download scandisk to a disk and just run it?? Is that how I would format? Where the hell is BRAN!
