computer hax0r question

ok, seriously...

say a friend of mine was using someone else's wireless connection, and he has router access.

is it possible to tell who the owner of the connection is? there are about 16 other people connecting to this connection, and it is seriously hurting my friend's d/l speeds.

before he enables MAC filtering, he wants to make sure he doesn't block the actual owner.

The guy with the best signal strength is probably the owner - he's closest to the router. Try and find a status sheet that is showing the db of each of the connected signals.

if its not his connection he shouldent be doing that stuff to it ;)

he is helping this guy by making sure so many people arent stealing his bandwidth.

he is a true humanitarian

where would he find such information on the router menu?

it's a belkin F5D7230-4 Firmware Version 4.05.03

he doesnt have to be hardwired into the router to adjust the administrative options? Also, why doesnt he just encrypt it? Setup a 128 bit encryption, everyone who uses the router gets the wireless key.

no, no...he is using someone's wireless on the sly, along with 30 other people.

well, since he feels bad for this poor guy, he wants to ban everyone off the router (except for the owners and himself, of course), since they are killing the speeds.

what would you guys do?

128-bit encryption. MAC filtering is really the ultimate, but no one could really get through that encryption.

It would make it easier for other computers to temporarily use it. Like when I have people come over for group stuff they connect to ours with their laptops.

if the owner is using it with wireless too, then the owner would know right away that something was up, when all of a sudden he couldnt get in because it was encrypted, lol.
then the owner would actually start to learn how to secure the router and the fun would all be over.

maybe i'm not making sense here.

ok, it appears that someone has an unsecured wireless connection in my friend's apartment complex. well, it seems like almost every fucking tenant is using the same, single connection.

well, since this is seriously slowing download speeds,, something needs to be done - ie, banning everyone off of the router, except for himself and the owner.

however, since he doesn't know who the owner is, he just can't start banning people using MAC filtering.

so he wants to do it discretely? That may be hard. I dont know if there's a way to tell who owns which mac address.

i understand what you are saying. i would start by banning people with the lowest signal strength, after that im not sure what to tell you.

maybe there is a way to check the time and date that everyone first connected. and hope that he was the first person to connect to his router, lol.

or they could track down which apartment the signal was coming from pretty easily. after that your friend could try to become friends with the owner of the router :)

there isnt, unless he were to go to each laptop that was connecting to it and look it up. and that would either involve becoming friends with the tenants and using their laptops, or breaking in while they are asleep, LOL.

the signal strength is the best lead. hopefully there is only one person with 5 bars, and the rest have 4 bars or lower.

he doesn't see a list of signal strengths for actively connected users.

uhh, then he's screwed. he could just randomly start to filter out IPs i suppose, and hope he gets lucky, lol.

or there might be a chance that whoever has the router isnt using the wireless part but their desktop is connected via hard line.

another guess is that whoever has the lowest IP on the router is probably the owner, since theyd be one of the first people to connect (or at least thats how it works on my router)

this is quite a task
you could set the dhcp address pool to only allow a certain number of addresses to be broadcasted.
but you still have to get in touch with the routers owner

there is no way around it, unless he knows who the owner is

most people have multiple computers on their routers, check the computer-IDs to see if any two are similiar

you could also set the connection to not broadcast the network, that way people that dont know about it already cant see it very easily

Chances are the owner has the first IP address in the DHCP scope, assuming that's being used. If you ping an IP then do 'arp -a' you will get the mac address for each respective IP address.

yea the owner is probably going to be the first address.

poink, did you post this on a hackers forum yet for advice?
