Computer Hackers Out There?

Need some help from anyone able to trace IP addresses.

This guy committed credit card fraud on a friend of mine. I was wondering if anyone could trace this IP address (aol account also so it should be easy) and possibly provide the owner's information.

172.138.129.226 is registered to America Online (ac8a81e2.ipt.aol.com)

if they have an aol account, they usually go out through one of the proxies and it is also usually dhcp - meaning that their IPs change frequently, and they might not be the same person (if it is a proxy, then it is one computer representing many people).

your best bet would be to contact AOL and go through their service to deal with it.

AOL is a dial-up, you'd need someone on the inside to give you username, address etc. Or a court order, good luck on both.

technically I think AOL also has a cable modem service too - if you want to get nit-picky - but what Code says is still all true.

Yep, and AOL keeps records for 4 days, period.

Let them go through the authorities and have them find out who it is.

Report the IP , date and time to AOL. They keep all this shit in their records and it should be easy tracking him down. AOL is known for laying down the smack on abusing members.
