Columbus Day?

Amazing that its a holiday in this country.

He was not the first European to reach the Americas

He claimed to hear divine voices

Columbus ordered a man who was caught stealing corn to have his nose and ears cut off and auctioned off as a slave

Columbus required the natives on what is now Haiti who were above 14 years of age to find a certain quota of gold, to be signified by a token placed around their necks. Those who failed to reach their quota would have their hands chopped off. This was called a tribute system and was one of the ways Columbus tried to repay investors who lent him money for his costly expeditions

Before he died Columbus had his titles of Governor of the Indies and Admiral of Ocean Sea (Atlantic Ocean) taken from him and he was arrested

Columbus allowed his men to take Native women back to Europe with them.

Columbus repeatedly took natives back to Europe as slaves, sometimes as payment to those he was heavily in debt to.

true, my company doesn't recognize it.

its interesting how mis information can be spread so easily. Of course Columbus was made out to be a hero back in the 1800s when there wasn't the internet and such easy access to historical records.

Fact is, the guy was considered to be a tyrant by his own country, he was a murderer, slave trader, and fond of torture.

And now he gets a holiday?

Bro, if you look at his behavior back then it's pretty much par for the course for other explorers at that time. Approve? Nope.

Admit it.....you hate Columbus because he was a big time Christian !

(which is true btw)

true! But do we have an entire day set aside for those guys?

Lots of terrible shit went down, and I'm torn myself because I have to admit that I would not be here today enjoying the life that I do if it wasn't for people who did do some very terrible things!

I think a more honest look at history should be the goal. I'm not saying we all need to swear off Columbus, but lets look at what he ddi and analyze both the positive and negative aspects of it instead of just running around saying what a hero the guy was.

Most people don't know, he didn't discover the mainland americas in 1492. His first voyage took him to the carribian islands.

yeah, he was a big time christian, check out this quote! Grabbed from wikipedia:

…we might form great friendship, for I knew that they were a people who could be more easily freed and converted to our holy faith by love than by force, gave to some of them red caps, and glass beads to put round their necks, and many other things of little value, which gave them great pleasure, and made them so much our friends that it was a marvel to see. They afterwards came to the ship’s boats where we were, swimming and bringing us parrots, cotton threads in skeins, darts, and many other things; and we exchanged them for other things that we gave them, such as glass beads and small bells. In fine, they took all, and gave what they had with good will. It appeared to me to be a race of people very poor in everything.…They are very well made, with very handsome bodies, and very good countenances [features]. They neither carry nor know anything of arms, for I showed them swords and they took them by the blade and cut themselves through ignorance. They have no iron…I saw some with marks of wounds on their bodies, and I made signs to ask what it was, and they gave me to understand that people from other adjacent islands came with the intention of seizing them, and that they defended themselves. I believe, and still believe, that they come here from the mainland to take them prisoners. They should be good servants and intelligent, for I observe that they quickly took in what was said to them, and I believe that they would easily become Christians, as it appeared to me that they had no religion.''

Columbus gets a holiday but Native Americans don't, frigging amazing.

The irish have St.Pattys Day, the blacks have MartinLutherKing, and us Italians have Columbus day. I see nothing wrong with it. :) I always call off work that day..

I'd hope that just about every school is teaching that he landed in the carribean. That's what I was taught, and I'm old. What I was always told about him in school was that we have columbus day because it took a lot of sack to go out on his trip because people still thought the world was flat. He didn't discover the americas, vikings did if I'm not mistaken. But his trip led to the west's occupation by stinky euros. Fuck, he thought he reached India.

from what I remember, I heard he sailed at 1492, the nina, pinta, santa maria, he landed at plymouth rock.

Again, that is just what I remember from like 3rd grade.

He did have balls, the guy was a visionary, a leader, and commanded a great deal of respect. His calculations on the size of the earth were way off though.

BUT, people in 1492 believed the earth was a sphere. They thought that it was one big land mass on one side and all ocean on the other side and columbus thought it was substantially smaller than it really is.

Again, I was just stating what I could recall coming out of grade school. Of course not all of it is factual.

I went to a private school, they also taught me that heaven has streets made from gold and rivers that have milk and honey flowing in them.

Neither seems very practical.

lol. I went to one of those schools too. They told me my twin cousins that died as infants probably went to hell because they were born and baptised as Catholics. They said that they sinned by crying when they wanted attention. Now, I could be bitter and ignorant for the rest of my life because of things like that and put anyone down that has any similar beliefs, or I could choose to take it for what it is and move on with life. Which do you think made me happier?

Kensington Runestone dated 1362, could show up in North America.

Leif Erikson discovered North American and traveled all the way to Minnesota, 100 years before columbus,

Leif, just got bored and went home, no big deal,

Sorry Columbus, Spain, Italy, etc, the vikings were here first.

Columbus Day is just a reason for the dead-beat government employees to receive another day off work.......if you even call it work.

That's what I always wondered. I'm truly fortunate for living in this great country. But I also hold alot of guilt for what we did to the Native Americans.

You can go on and on about that, just like it doenst make sense to give Martin Luther King Jr. a holiday either.. He was a plagiarist, a liar, and had an adulterous sex life, and he is issued a holiday!

wish I could...always feel so guilty if I don't come in....but I better do something soon before I lose my days off.

I used to feel that way too.. Just use your family as an excuse, they cant really say sh*t to that.. Family first, ya know!

ignorant would have been to accept everything at face value and never question.

bitter is a self imposed state of mind, I don't reccomend that for anyone.

Encouraging people to seek truth and think for themselves is a good thing.

whatever you say bro...

as far as i'm concerned it's native american day.

only the italians are all for a day commenmorating a pedophile slave trader.

even though he was italian, he flew under the spanish flag so I'm not sure why Italians would be proud of him. They had Vespucci didn't they

yeah I never understood why Italians got so high on Columbus, he flew for SPAIN and was a SPANISH ADMIRAL. Plus his exact origins have never been fully agreed upon.

Just like the blacks are all for a day commenmorating a liar, racist, plagiarist, and adulterer. Goes both ways..

as more and moe of this countyr pledge roots to mexico, asia, etc. - columbus is even less important.

what has he done honorable? nothing? if it was 2006 - he'd be hated by so many right now and would b on the level of a bill o'reilly.

How would Columbus be any less important to Mexicans than he is to Americans? What language do the Mexicans speak? And why?
