Columbia problems...

Too bad the camera moved and the pole is in the way when it 1st breaks up. Somebody probably has amateur video of it though. Something breaks off before it goes behind the pole.

They are saying that there is NO way they could have ejected too.

I just saw the pictures of the crew...My heart breaks!

Have you seen the pics they are showing of the debris in Texas?
 
They are telling people not to mess with any debris, to just call the authority's. and the heard a loud boom 20minutes earlier.

Geez, I saw the Columbia take off for the first time in grade 6 & now I've seen it blow up. This is sickening.


This will set the space program back years... again.
 
It's impossible to eject unless the shuttle is in subsonic speed. Also it happened pretty high so no way in hell they'll be able to blame it on terrorists.

I have a question. How much does such a space shuttle costs ?
 
there are now multiple amatuer video clips of debris falling over texas, NASA has rescheduled the press conference for apprx. 11:30 AM - EST

Yeah, all those dollar bills inside the payload bay up in smoke.

They go up to do scientific research which can't be done on Earth.
 
When this happened in 86 is was a MAJOR setback in the US Space program... I wonder what impact, if any this tragedy will have?

hey it sucks but you know what? those people knew what they were getting into. it's not like they were taking the DC to NY shuttle, they were taking the space shuttle. I feel for sorry for their families and anyone that may have been hurt by the debris, but oh well. life goes on.
 
just reported that a piece of the ship fell off as it went up. it was picked up and moved off the runway. fucking thing was falling apart on the way up

My fellow Americans, this day has brought terrible news and great sadness to our country. At 9:00 a.m. this morning, Mission Control in Houston lost contact with our Space Shuttle Columbia. A short time later, debris was seen falling from the skies above Texas. The Columbia is lost; there are no survivors.

On board was a crew of seven: Colonel Rick Husband; Lt. Colonel Michael Anderson; Commander Laurel Clark; Captain David Brown; Commander William McCool; Dr. Kalpana Chawla; and Ilan Ramon, a Colonel in the Israeli Air Force. These men and women assumed great risk in the service to all humanity.

In an age when space flight has come to seem almost routine, it is easy to overlook the dangers of travel by rocket, and the difficulties of navigating the fierce outer atmosphere of the Earth. These astronauts knew the dangers, and they faced them willingly, knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life. Because of their courage and daring and idealism, we will miss them all the more.

All Americans today are thinking, as well, of the families of these men and women who have been given this sudden shock and grief. You're not alone. Our entire nation grieves with you. And those you loved will always have the respect and gratitude of this country.

The cause in which they died will continue. Mankind is led into the darkness beyond our world by the inspiration of discovery and the longing to understand. Our journey into space will go on.

In the skies today we saw destruction and tragedy. Yet farther than we can see there is comfort and hope. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, "Lift your eyes and look to the heavens. Who created all these? He who brings out the starry hosts one by one and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing."

The same Creator who names the stars also knows the names of the seven souls we mourn today. The crew of the shuttle Columbia did not return safely to Earth; yet we can pray that all are safely home.

May God bless the grieving families, and may God continue to bless America.
 
It feels like you're watching a bad movie on tv until you drive home and the signs over the highway that usually say not to drink and drive are changed to tell you not to touch space shuttle debris and report it immediately. There was a fire in an apartment complex in my county that was supposedly linked to falling debris.
 
At first i thought it was a terrorist attack, but thankfully it wasn't.

Very tragic indeed. May they all R.I.P.
 
statistically speaking space travel is still the safest form of travel in the world.
 
I dunno.....todays seven plus the crew form the 80's....on a person to person basis Im not so sure that it is safer than travelling by car...of course getting to the moon in a car might take a while...

True... there probably have been under 100 people to go to into space in the past so many years... 14 have died... that's 14% of all people into space have died... (from US) since Challenger (including)
