College study tips..

ideally like what someone else said - read ahead in your books - read what you need for class, take notes as to what confuses you - ask questions based on those if they aren't adressed in the notes you take in class - talk to your prof outside of class since they are more likely to talk (or the TA if the prof doens't make himself accessible).
then before the tests, finals look through your notes and read the areas where the notes don't make it clear....

that said, what I did was 1) only do the assignments you really need to do, 2) never do the readings if you go to class, or never go to class if you do the readings (you are screwed if you try this and never go to class nor do the readings - found that out the hard way), then right before finals, if they give you some study time, do all the readings for the class then - you migh thave to risk it an dnot do all fo them and just skim some and hope that isn't a large part of the final.

It also depends on the quality of school you are going to - some of them you can never go to the classes, never do the homework, never read, and then just copy off of your friends and be fine.
others you need to work your ass off just to get a C and hope the curve saves your ass.

Go to class, read the assigned readings, and do all of the assignments (even if they aren't for a grade)...It doesn't get simpler than that. (I am in my 3rd year)

for me it was just listening well in class and taking really good notes. put a star beside things they emphasize. i think you should do your readings but not concentrate on them as much. sometimes profs test you on stuff in the text they don't bring up in lectures. i only ever studied for 2-3 days before the exams and i graduated with distinction. and don't miss your classes unless you feel you can afford to. do your assignments... the few extra % help if you hand everything in on time, done reasonably well.

also, prioritize and try not to procrastinate!

you should be alright at a JC - at my college each prof would give you enough work for 3 weeks, and it would be do at the beginning of the next week.
so if you were taking 4 classes, that was 12 weeks worth of work, all due in 5-7 days.
needless to say, you learned to prioritize as well as do triage as to what really needed to get done or not.
then study for tests if there was time.
then add several hours of track/xc practice...

JC should be much easier - do really well there and then use those grades to transfer somewhere good.

Okay for real... Happy, dread and laser have excellent advise. Further I was pretty much a semi pro student until three years ago. Anyway, read the overviews of the material being covered. This is your roadmap for the salient points to be covered. Oh and unless your an excellent bullshitter which since your in JC your not, lay off the herb during the week. :)
