College Degrees and your occupation.

Night Fly

New member
I am going to nursing school for my BSN. I am very excited about getting my degree and starting 'work.'

The thing is...since I have been working at the hospital....all these nurses tell me that I should 'get out' while I can. I don't get this because I am SO excited about my career taking off...

My question is...

How many of you here totally regret getting the degree that you have or even just regret your line of work that you are in right now?

I mean...was it all worth it to you???

i regret my degree... but love working with kids....

i wish i got my teaching cert. instead of a BA-philosophy degree.

for real:

Occupation: Soon to be an Attorney

Degrees: Juris Doctors, BA English, BA Philosophy.

It's all worth it not because I'll make some money here and there, but because I learned.

That's what education should be all about.

bfa/part of mfa... doing a certificate in design

hopefully either i'll work in the field next year or i'll do my masters in design.

Hey Small....ever thought about interior design??? You seem like you would be good at it, for some reason.

That may be what you are talking about, though...

BS in Political Sceince, Masters of Public Administration, BS in Criminal Justice, Master Arts in Criminal Justice, Juris Doctorate, working part time on Phd in CJ. I am a District Attorney and have been a prosecutor for 14 years. I love my work. When I do get bored, I will teach (hence the Phd).

Night Fly: My sister has a Phd in nursing and both of her daughters have RN. One has her masters. They love their work. One is a traveling nurse and travels all over the world. She can sometimes make over$5000.00/ week (not always) depending on the circumstances. she works about six months a year and plays the rest of the time.

Do what you want. If you don't like it, do somthing else. You are not chained to a profession.

Nightfly - my cousin got her BSRN years ago and loves it,
but it is very stressfull.
The money (as in every field) is in specialization.
She specialized in critical care unit - heart attacks, burn victims, really serious cases.
On the other hand, my ex wife did not specialize,
worked in the birth ward cause she likes babies,
had less stress, and a whole lot less money.
She eventually hated standing on her feet enough to change jobs and become a realator.
Both of them remarked it was really hard not to take their job home with them.
They may have been off duty, but they couldn't stop thinking about their patients all night.
And the rotating shifts are hell on your social life and your sleep.

litig8r---

I am totally happy with the profession that I have chosen. I know that it is what I was called to do. I guess I was just wondering why so many other people can have professions that they truly don't enjoy.

Granted...money is definitely needed to survive in this world, but hell...if I had to decide between working somewhere and making a load of money, but being unhappy...and making a little less money but being very happy...Guess which one I would take?

i should add that my cousin has a BA in admin and is an RN... and she's an emergency nurse who does helicopter rescue. she's in ny right now helping with the rescues and stuff.

she loves what she's doing.

BS in BA, (or was it a BA in B.S. ?), accounting major heavy in liberal arts courses also, as it took 3 schools and 4 majors before i graduated with something.

the origional lost child!

i landed a job with the national association of securities dealers (NASD), discovered that i LOATHED anything vaguely asociated with accounting, sorta fell into my present job with the federal government. it's dull but easy, excellent benefits, decent but not great money.

perhaps one day i'll figure out what the hell i wanna do with my life!

I'm glad to hear that its not only about money for Nightfly.

If it's money someone's after, just marry it. Better that putting yourself through 80 hour weeks of a shit job you hate.

Ryan.

John...

Yes, nursing is a very stressful job...especially the area that I am going in to. I want to be a critical care/trauma nurse...and hopefully within the next 4 years be a life flight nurse.

I guess there are different people for different types of nursing...I hope that I will never get to the point where I will take my job 'home' with me, but I guess at some point, it's inevitable.

I think nursing is one of those underrated jobs, too. Too much hard work and not enough recognition.

Ryan...that is so true. I still can't see how women can marry men for their money when no emotion or love it involved. It's messed up.

I have so much passion for what I am doing right now it's not even funny. I can't wait to take care of people and help them out. It makes me feel wonderful inside.

good. I think your profession is noble along with doctors firefighters, police officers, and teachers. You're helping people. You should feel good about that.

As opposed to us attorneys who think we're helping others when usually we're only helping big corporations........

i only have an associate degree, and work at a chemical company that produces chemicals on a large scale bases. it can be very dangerous but i love it.

Night Fly,
You will do fine. Go into your work because you love it and the rest will come along. Needless to say, being a prosecutor is not the fastest way to wealth as an attorney however, I loved what I do and am, therefore, very good at it. As such, I rose through the ranks to become the the DA. Still, I'm not rich ( in the monetary sense) but make well over six figures and live where you can buy/build a 4000 sq ft home for under 250K. Good luck and have fun.

And you needed to pay thousands of dollars a year to learn?

I don't know about you, but I could learn everything I have been and will be taught in my Bachelor of Computer Science degree program in less than a year for under $200.

my turn...okay...i'm one of those "lost" ones...lol.
it's a pain in the ass i assure you.
I have YET to get a degree in something...I am debating
on giving up on court reporting after 4 1/2 years...i know!! i know!!! very sad, isn't it....I had 2 more damn speeds to go and i have an EXCESSIVE case of burnout!!! I think I would've quit a long time ago if it wasn't for everyone making me feel guilty because i've "put so much time into it"...well, i've basically come to the conclusion that i don't wanna' do it anymore. on top of that, it was ranked the 2nd most stressful job, next to an air traffic controller...if that's the case, i definately don't want it...makin' that much mula' w/that much stress isn't worth it to me.
school was stressful enough. i haven't gone in a couple weeks and it feels like a ton of weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
now, i'm thinkin' about tryin' to get accepted into the respiratory therapy program here. i wanna' help people...and both my grandparents have breathing problems....so....sounds interesting.:) any respiratory therapists on this here board????

Night..Do what makes you happy. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE FAT NURSES who hate their lives, thus hate their job. You can make good money in that field if you keep educating yourself. Texas Nurses can top over 6 figures before they retire. If it interests you..do it.

Journalism Degree -- I'm a senior copywriter at a Midwest advertising agency.
Bored as fuck professionally, but in a bit of a financial hole right now so can't switch. Am making some moves to get out of it, and hopefully life will become more exciting. Things get much tougher when you have a wife and two kids to take care of. If it was just me out for me, who knows? I don't have (m)any regrets though...

Hmmm . . . I seem to recall someone else giving her this advice a couple of months ago. I wonder who . . . ;)

LOL....well, don't worry, Nitlyan...I do not plan on giving up my dreams just because they haven't achieved theirs. I am more than ready to get out into the 'real world' and do this.

I know that there is a huge shortage of nurses right now, and when I graduate it will be even worse. Thus, they are paying nurses alot more money than they used to. Travel nursing is something I definitely want to do. That is, of course, until I decide that I want to settle down (which won't be anytime soon...lol).

It is so neat to see the different variety of education levels and occupations of the members here. It is also good to hear that not alot of people regret where they are and what they are doing at this point in their lives. That is very commendable....

Nightfly...nursing is a great career if that is what you like. I have a friend who went into nursing and is doing quite well for herself. If you are after the bigger bucks, specialize like others have suggested. Nursing is a career where you will never have to worry about not having a job. Good luck....

litigatr....nice credentials, I thought about doing the law thing myself but got a little turned off to the field by things like the O.J. case. Since you are a DA, just wondering what is your feelings about steriods??

My academic background is:
B.B.A. Finance
B.B.A. Accounting
B.B.A. Marketing
M.B.A. Finance/Accounting
CPA (soon to be...if i pass the Nov. test)

I have only had two AAS cases in 14 years. They were accidental finds by narcs looking for real drugs. I prosecuted the cases but made very very resonable plea offers (about what I would offer for a misdemeanor Possession of Marihuana). I personally think they should be legalized or at least "decriminalized". However, they are against the law (but so is speeding and I prosecute both). I have elected not to use AAS because it is illegal (same for marihuana which I dearly miss from college). I try to avoid getting in the trap of being some hypocritical asshole who punishes people for shit I do myself ( although I still drive like a bat otta hell) I would definately try a cycle in another country if it were legal and I had the oppotunity.

Don´t let 'em get you down, NightFly. People often burn out and change careers now. They probably shared your own enthusiasm in the beginning.

I have a ridiculous number of degrees in unrelated fields -- from Spanish lit, linguistics and journalism to psychology and philosophy. Most of them are useless in terms of immediate earning capacity, but, in retrospect they´ve given me a great deal of freedom to work self-employed in some very creative ways.
