CKD: counterproductive for maintaining solid foundation of muscle mass?!?!

In the absence of carbohydrates your body begins to metabolize larger and larger amounts of protein for additional energy. This is counterproductive for someone to try to build and MAINTAIN muscle mass. But with a ratio of 1g of protein per lb of body weight, how can that be enough to hold on to that muscle? When you reach Ketonemia, and your body produces ketone bodies as a result of incomplete buring of fats. And then these ketones can be used in place of glycogen for energy production. I realize you have ur carb-up day which refuel ur muscle with glycogen. But how long can you be in ketosis before your body starts using extra protein for energy, and starts tearing away at your muscles? Wouldn't it be better to stay just above ketosis?

the "theory" is when you are in ketosis you need to eat lots of fat for energy so it burns that instead and not protien. I woud assume in ketosis you would start to use protien for energy when you run out of fat.

I realize thats why you must be consuming abouut 80% of your intake in fats, but would adding some extra protein then be beneficial?

taking more protein will prevent you from entering ketosis because all the extra protein will go through gluconeogenesis and turn into glucose for energy, turning protein into energy is not something you want since then you will be using the muscle sparing nutrients for energy, with lower protein intake your body has no choice but to enter ketosis and you tryglicerides for energy, the end result protein is spared and used to repair muscle. keto type diet is also perfect type of diet for natural athlete trying to gain muscle mass, total caloric intake has to be increased to put the body in the state of caloric surplus
