I just had to go through this myself because the protein powders I was taking was not only raising my sodium intake (and blood pressure) but cholesterol.
For Cholesterol, I take: 2 - 4 cups of Oatmeal for breakfast. The oat fiber in the Oatmeal is soluble. How it works is that it will absorb the bile in your stomach which is the mechanism your liver uses to excrete cholesterol. It absorbs it and you pass it out on the can. Psyllium husks work in the same way BUT I would think a bowl of oatmeal might just be better as you are getting more fiber.
For blood pressure, I take:
a. 8 oz glass of Orange Juice in the morning. This has potassium in it and has shown to help lower it about 10%.
b. Hawthorne. Similar to one of the BP meds I believe but not really sure which one. Google for additional information.
c. Coenzyme Q-10. This stuff is expensive but is supposed to promote a healthy heart and lower the risk of heart disease. When I can afford it I add it to my diet.
Take a look at your diet and eliminate anything high in sodium. The normal diet should yield no more than 2000 mg of daily sodium intake. You have a high blood pressure because the high amount of sodium intake is causing your kidneys to work overtime to try to excrete it. Eliminate that. I simply went from a whey protein powder that was high in sodium to one that was not and dropped 40 points on my systolic in 1 week (174 to 134) and over the course of a month dropped it down to 120.
My cholesterol was just checked to be below 150 which the doctor said was entirely based on my oatmeal consumption.
Good luck.
