Cat related Question

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I've always had dogs my whole life and this is the first year I have two 9 month old kittens running around the house. :) I'm wondering if I should be worried when my cat walks up the stairs and walks along the ledge above the foyer. It's a pretty big drop from the top of the stairs to the main entrance, probably like 10-15 feet so I panic whenever she walks along the ledge. Do cats have better balance than most animals and are not likely to fall, and if she did fall would she land on her feet and not get hurt? There's not much I can do to keep her from walking there. Just thought I'd ask...

They will land on their feet. When I was a kid I used to lauch cats off of a tree and they always landed and walked away fine and still came back for more. Amazing animals. If they do fall, they'll learn quickly not to do it again. What you don't want to do is throw it in the pool.

Nope, they should be fine at that height and at their age......Now when they get older, maybe not so much - but they will be fine.....

Cats are amazing in that respect ... don't worry about them getting hurt

If you have always had dogs then a cat is a different pet in repect to how they aspire to affection ... dogs will take it anytime .. a cat only on there terms .. if you want to get along then always let the cat come to you , if you start chasing and picking them up against there will you may end up with a beast that will lash out at you when you least expect it .

You don't own a cat .. you co-inhabitate with them , totaly different then a dog

Is this a real question?

Props bro I could not have asked a question like that.

K to you.

Real question. (Knew I should've done some research before I posted it. LOL.) I never had a cat before and when I was a kid my first german shepard heard the doorbell ring, missed a step and broke its leg falling down the stairs. Wasn't sure if cats were as clumbsy. I have hard wood floors on the top of the stairs so it can get slippery after you clean it. Thanks for the above answers though.

Awww, poor dog!! As you can see by my screen name - at one point I had 5 cats....they CAN be clumsy....but when they do something stupid they'll get this look like "I meant to do that!" or they'll stop & clean themselves...LOL

There is also a "time" I like to call bughouse where they will just run around the house with their tail all puffed up with wild abandon......Any cat questions, post or PM me.....

LOL. When mine gets scared it runs away bouncing with it's back hunched up in the air like a kangaroo. Not to mention sitting on my shoulder while I eat breakfast...She gets away with anything!

just watch out for the ceiling fan
:FRlol:

One of mine (I have seven) is an Abyssinian cross. For those of you who've never had them, Abby's are ummmm, nuts. GREAT cats, totally recommended, but they WILL find THE highest spot in the house and figure out how to get there (among other things), they are curious, they're underfoot, and they have a wonderful sense of play ... they also stand up on their hind legs a LOT more than other cats, best of all they look like tiny lions in coloration and markings ...

ANYWAY, I have a ceiling fan in my kitchen ... my abby was up on top of the kitchen cabinets ... she decided to jump FROM the top of the kitchen cabinet to the ceiling fan blade (the ceiling fan was off at the time). Unfortunately she landed the jump ... of course the ceiling fan blade is not designed to hold a kitty, no matter how small she is (she's VERY petite), especially not one with any amount of momentum behind her landing, and the ceiling fan blade AND cat fell down on top of my husband, who was quietly reading totally unaware of the drama going on over his head ...

Edit: Oh, and Alex, most cats are capable of standing jumps of up to 6' or so straight UP, a 10' or so drop down is really nothing. Most cats wouldn't WILLINGLY put themselves into a position where they feel they're in danger once they've gotten past the kitten stage (like all children, kittens can be a bit daft and get themselves into trouble if left to it).
