Does anyone have experience with a cat who has/had diabetes?

We just discovered that our five year old has it, and we now have to administer a shot of insulin everyday for probably the rest of his life.

Our vet informed us that some cats can come out of it, or a changed diet can regulate the diabetes as opposed to the insulin. Has this happened to anyone?

Will the cat be able to survive and live a fairly normal life on the insulin?

No kidding.

Apparently it is human grade insulin since the main manufacturer of cat insulin went out of business last year.

So my cat hooked me up with a lifetime supply of it.

We have a Barn Cat that likes to sleep on the hood of my truck and leave sand and scratches.

I'd like to give him a SHOT with my 12Ga.. Does that count as advice?

Sorry to hear of you Pets issues. Is this cat like a child ?
I can barely clip my Dogs Toenails. I can imagine giving them a shot every day. Especially a cat..

The cat takes the shots like a big boy.

If I tried to clip my dogs toenails I'd probably lose a hand.

Sorry to hear about the kitty, Schwee!

I had a cat with kidney failure once! Not a fun thing I assure you. I had to inject fluid under the nap of his neck so his kidney's would flush out daily! Try holding a cat and injecting him!Your cat will also learn the sound of you getting the supplies ready for the injections...My damn cat would hear that drawer open and BAM-he'd high tail it under the bed!

You get soooo damned attached to the pets....

Tell me about it.

We have four of them.

I swear my Lab's nails are like Horse Hooves.
They grow almost overnight and are as hard and thick as heck.

My wife has a Chuhuahua and we go out and eat Babyback ribs and bring home the bones.
Using a bone to distract her while we clip her nails is the only way to get them done without her tearing you up..

When she is chewing a bone, you could practicaly do surgery on her and she wouldn't notice..

Is it type I or II? If it is type II, then I would imagine taking the cat off of dry food, which is comprised mainly of starches, and putting it on meat based foods would help treat the problem.

Thanks Cockdezl.

Type two we think.

The vet didn't want to make too many changes yet, but that is probably coming.

He has to spend all day the 22nd at the vet's office so he can test his blood sugar all day. Once we have the right dose of insulin, the diet will probably be next.
