Canseco arrested on probation violation

Posted: Friday June 20, 2003 1:52 PM

DAVIE, Fla. (CNN) -- Former baseball player Jose Canseco was arrested Friday at his home in Davie, Fla., for violating probation, Lt. Bill Bamford of the Davie Police Department told CNN.

According to Bamford, Canseco was arrested for testing positive for steroids in violation of the terms of his probation.

Canseco was under house arrest for previously violating probation on assault charges that stemmed from a 2001 brawl at a Miami Beach nightclub.

The former slugger was being processed at a Broward County Jail substation, according to a spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Here's more:

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Former baseball star Jose Canseco was arrested Friday after testing positive for steroids, violating his probation stemming from a nightclub scuffle, officials said.

Canseco, 38, was arrested at home for allegedly taking the controlled substance on June 3, according to an arrest report from the Davie Police Department. State prison spokesman Sterling Ivey said Canseco recently had tested positive for the muscle-building drug.

Canseco, who had been under house arrest for earlier violating his probation, was being held at Broward County Jail without bond pending a court appearance, a jail recording said. Miami-Dade Circuit Court officials said he will likely be brought before Judge Leonard Glick on Monday or Tuesday.

Canseco, who retired from baseball last year, was charged with his twin brother for the 2001 brawl in Miami Beach. He was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty last year to felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery.

Glick ruled earlier this year that Canseco had violated his probation by leaving Florida for several weeks and failing to start community service and anger-management classes. He sentenced him to 30 days in jail and two years of house arrest, then warned him that further violations could result in a 15-year prison sentence.

Canseco has spent part of his time entertaining visitors who have spent $2,500 through his personal Web site to spend a day with him.

Manny Hillman, Canseco's lawyer in civil matters, declined to comment Friday about the arrest. Attorney Gustavo Lage, who represented Canseco in the fight case, did not return a message Friday seeking comment.

Canseco's twin, Ozzie, also is on probation for the melee. He was arrested last month in Punta Gorda in southwest Florida and charged with possessing an illegal anabolic steroid, driving with a revoked license and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being jailed until a June 30 hearing, also before Glick. Ozzie had a brief major league career with Oakland and St. Louis.

Jose Canseco hit 462 home runs in his major league career, the 26th-best in history. He retired in May 2002 after 1,887 games with seven teams, finishing his career with a .266 batting average, 1,407 RBIs and 200 stolen bases.

Canseco was the 1988 American League MVP and helped lead the Oakland Athletics to three straight World Series appearances from 1988-90. Oakland won the World Series in 1989.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Canseco has admitted he used steroids during his baseball career and claimed that 85 percent of all other major league players also were taking the muscle-enhancing drugs. He announced plans to reveal baseball's steroid secrets in a still-unpublished book.

Here's more regarding Canseco's brother Ozzie, who was also busted for possessing gear back in May. I can't imagine why Ozzie would have consented to a search of his vehicle. These guys both need to get themselves a copy of LEGAL MUSCLE.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) -- Jose Canseco's twin brother, Ozzie, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after police found an illegal anabolic steroid in his car during a traffic stop.

Ozzie Canseco was also charged with driving with a revoked license after he was stopped Thursday because the windows of his car were illegally tinted, Charlotte County sheriff's spokesman Bob Carpenter said.

Canseco consented to a search during which the steroid Nandrolone and a syringe were found, Carpenter said.

Jose Canseco, under house arrest for his part in the nightclub brawl in 2001, admitted last year that he used steroids during his baseball career.

Ozzie Canseco, released from jail after posting a $25,000 bond Friday, is on probation for his role in the 2001 nightclub brawl.

The Miami-Dade prosecutor's office did not immediately return a call Friday to detail how Thursday's arrest would affect Ozzie Canseco's probation.

Ozzie Canseco played briefly for the Oakland A's and St. Louis Cardinals in the early 1990s, hitting .200 with no homers in 24 games over three seasons. He had a lengthy minor league career and played in Japan.

"Canseco has spent part of his time entertaining visitors who have spent $2,500 through his personal Web site to spend a day with him."

I just re-read those news articles. Did anyone else find the above to be quite bizarre? WTF?!?

It's a depraved world we live in.

He should have stayed in Canada. No one would actually bother him with AAS. This guy was probably one of the best talent I've seen in the Major leagues, but also the biggest waste.
