From what I remember no. It only lifted them about 2ft off the ground. I too wanted a jet pack badly I would pay 70k for one if they made em. So the best advice I can give is to steal one from area 69 in GTS San Andreas and fly around in it.

Ya'll have stumbled upon a niche of history that I have a fair amount of knowledge on.

Couple of different types here.

Most remember the rocket belt/pack. Came into being in the early 60's and had a sporadic life after that. Hydrogen Peroxide powered but hat a very limited time of thrust.

A no-shit jet belt was built under a DARPA contract... if memory serves, it was in the early 70's. I've got pictures of it floating around. They used a small engine built by Williams of Walled Lake, MI. William's was a bit of a pioneer on small jet engines - their engines are used in a lot of cruise missiles.

strap 2 50lbs CO2 tanks on your back and have someone hit the fittings off with a hammer. it will be cool at first until it runs out of CO2.

OR till he hits a wall with his head really really fast. :D

Trivia tidbit.... the key to the jetback was very fine thrust control. In other words, you want to avoid the CO2 tank valve thing.

So, the control valve they used was for a thruster off of the Gemini or Atlas space capsule. Can't remember exactly which one it was. The control valve is the "magic ingredient" for the whole rocket pack. Almost all successful jet packs use this control belt. Other valves offer too coarse of a throttle control.

Flying platform is a lot more practical, but still with one major drawback: if the power goes out, you die. This, of course, is a problem.

No wings to glide with, no autorotation like a chopper. If you take it up over twelve feet or so, you'd better have something like a rocket-deployed chute.

Heh.... I've also done a lot of research into the flying platforms. :) Hiller did a lot of work on them in the 50s-60s. The gear box was key - had to turn shaft power into 2 counter rotating props. Counter-rotation was a requirement to keep the platform from spinning.

The platforms also had an issue with attaining much forward speed. The ducted fan tip would exhibit a "pitch up" moment if forward speed increased too much. The pitch up would slow/halt the platforms forward movement.

For something truly cool, you should check into the WASP/Xjet. Late 70's, early 80s design. Based around upright mounted cruise missile engine. Cool shit.
