i wish a prominent team athlete would "come out" while still playing. it would do wonders for our image.

He played for the Vikings. He would sing all the time, he atually had a damn good voice.

I watched that last, and was wondering who else in the NFL was too scared to come out. If what the one former team mate said is true, then no one will be coming out anytime soon while on the active roster.

To suffer a beat down from your own teammates is enough to keep anybody quiet.

But I do give him props for at least coming out. GnJ, if I had known that a hairdresser could land an NFL pro, I might have rethought my career choice. (but he was GAY!)

I think that maybe someone could come out in the Pros, IF they were a star player. Because of a the publicity that the Pros get, I don't think that there is AS MUCH of a chance of getting a beat down.

But, I don't think it would be a good idea for high school or college players. At that age the teamates are too immature to accept alternative lifestyles as well as adults. I know when I was 18, I wouldn't want to shower or have physical contact with a known gay guy. At 28, I think I would be ok with it, as long as there was no inappropriate behavior/advances

Shit,one could only image the inner hell that guy was going through trying to hide that all those years.It's sad that some gays are so conditioned to fear the reaction of their being,but it's also our fault as a society for instilling that fear.Kudos to him for making a very brave decision,hopefully it will set a precidence for a greater tolerance/acceptance in sports.Great story.

I see your point gymtime, but the fact remains that the Pro players are in the media spotlight.

For example, that Shockly kid that plays tight end for the giants...... he said some shit about gays to Howard Stern, then had to retract it all and apologize publicly because of the media attention.

All the more reason to believe that the idea that it's somehow easier to come out in the pros than it is in high school or college doesn't make much sense.

True, and while on the outside they may have to appologize, but in the lockerroom, it sounds like anything goes.

To successfully keep your personal life out of sight from your team mates is a huge challenge (speaking from my military experience). I would expect shit from the other team, but from your own teammates? That's killer

This is only the second NFL player to come out. I think it is cool and I am sure there are a lot more. Good for him.

Statistics don't lie, however, interpreting them can.
If you look at global statistics, AIDS is a HETEROSEXUAL disease. In some African countries up to 25% of the total population are infected with the virus.

Please realize that the world doesn't begin and end at the US border. AIDs is a serious problem and a virus does not discriminate between homo- and hetero- sexuality. It is just plain ignorant to continue to believe the AIDs is GAY crap.

actually, there have been 3 ex-football players to have officially come out: dave kopay, tuaolo and roy simmons (ex-NYG). in addition, kopay admits to having a relationship with jerry smith, the ex-redskins tight end who retired w/over 400 catches and 60 TD's...

there is at least one NBA player currently playing who is known to be gay but who hasn't "come out" yet.

but for the sake of other jackasses on there that don't grasp the concept, look at the logistics of how AIDS transmission works and then make your own decision:

HIV is a virus, and lives in your body. Does that mean it is like a little mouse, hiding in your stomach? No, it is incredibly small and resides in your bodily fluids, with the highest concetrations in your blood. it doesn't think, it has no concept of what you are doing, if you are a man or woman, gay or straight, or if you are ugly or stupid. all it "knows" is that it needs to reporduce, and it has its way of doing that.
Now - they have shown that levels aren't high enough in saliva to effectively transmit HIV. So that method is out.
They have shown that the HIV dies outside of the body very quickly, so that rules out getting it from rolling around in other people's blood - so your assertion of sports players on the field/court/mat fearing it is a false one.

So basically, if blood to blood transmission is the "best" way to transmit it, and it has to be fast (meaning that if the blood is out in the air for any amount of time, it will die quickly), then the two ways that are known to transmit it so effectively are:
1) IV drug users that share needles. Just like when AAS users do IM and they pull back on the plunger to make sure that there is no blood because you don't want to be in a vein/artery, the IV user does the same to make sure that they are in one (you could argue they also do it to get the drug to premix a little for faster injection). so when you do that, if you have ever done any injection before and had blood come in, you know that the way syringes are designed, they leave a little bit of fluid leftover no matter how hard you try - including the blood if there was any in there. so if you pass that off to your friend after you do it and he/she does the same (draws blood up) and there was HIV blood of your's in there, they are going to mix theirs up in there and increase the likelyhood of injecting your blood, with the HIV, all inside. mainlining - fantastic.
if I had a cut on my face, and you did too, and we were wrestling around - there is very little chance that my blood would mix with your's and then somehow magically get sucked into one of your veins or arteries.
2) the other way that is claimed to be highly efficient is anal sex. the reason being that the vagina was specifically designed to be flexible and have rock hard cocks shoved in there over and over until they explode with a messy load all over their walls. it produces fluid that is to lubricate this system, and it is how we reproduce. anal sex on the other hand, involves an orifice that is "designed" for exit only, but humans have found that if you use it as an entry point, some pleasure can be derived from that as well... and pleasure is what drives us as beings - increasing dopamine levels. I stopped reading half way, but here is my logic smart guy. A vagina is a big soft bag and a penis easily goes into it. A mans asshole can tear easily when another man's boner is shoved up it. Thus we see how homosexuals give more aids out then heterosexuals. The stats dont lie and the reason the africans have aids is because they fuck prostitutes.
