Here is the painting: St Francis in Ecstasy, by Bellini
http://www.wga.hu/art/b/bellini/giovanni/1480-89/098ecsta.jpg

I already wrote 5 pages, got some feedback from the professor. Said I can raise my grade from a B to an A if I do the following:

1. Consider in your Interpretation why the landscape is so large in relation to the figure and how that relates to St. Francis's preaching and contribution to the church.

2. What sort of a landscape is this? Where? What time of day? What season? How do the lines of the composition help focus attention on the saint in his relation to this landscape?

I can help for #1,what I think is he is relativley small in compairison because in the big scheme of things he is just a small part, insignifcant almost ,where the world around him is the big picture.

#2 is a bit to technical for me to try and go there

are those grape leaves on the top right? that may help you figure out the season
is he facing west? if so thats a given on to the time of the day

2. His robe looks a lot like the rock structures around him, metaphorically reflecting his strong, grounded devotion to the church/faith. It looks like fall, and the sun is about to set, symbolizing that he has much more ground to cover and people to reach, and with a finite amount of time to do so.
And he needs to feed that donkey before it wanders over the edge of that cliff looking for food.

The saint is the focus in 2 ways:

1-- you can see a classic "Triangle Composition" here, and the saint is one of its corners; the other two being the upper left and upper right of the painting
2---the saint is more pronounced because of the warm color used to paint him against his cooler-colored immediate surroundings.

Take this from a pro :)
