Can adipocytes die naturally?

Is there a way to make fat cells actually die / decrease in number through diet and exercise alone? What kind of fat-gain causes adipocyte hyperplasia in normal people? Don't some pro bodybuilders have TONS of fat cells because of all of their bulking? I know some remain at low % bodyfat all year round, but with their high bodyweights, that is still a lot of fat.

What are all of the ways to decrease the number of fat cells including drugs?

Thanks.

Hmm

I believe LipoSuction can kill fat cells but if u eat like crap, new ones will get produced, DOnt quote me on that, when a bodybuilder is cut, he has managed to shrink his fat cells, not kill them. I hope that helps. Atleast I responded.

Thanks for the reply vitor97.

I have heard of PG2FA (or something like that) and now liposuction. Does the body NEVER kill it's fat cells without some form of unnatural "encouragement"?

CLA has been shown to cause apoptosis in rat adipocytes. Lyle McDonald was talking about injecting himself with a concoction for this purpose 6-8 months ago -- I have no idea what became of these plans.

Leptin will also do this, though the amount that can be manipulated through diet would like not get levels high enough.

Bump...

Dan Duchaine mentioned briefly that fat cells never die, but other authors have talked about fat cells decreasing in number through means that are not dangerous.

Cmon, ppl, doesn't anyone know?

It seems like adipocytes can diet naturally, although it is probably very rare. I have read about adipocyte apoptosis in some studies, but it is only mentioned breifly in relation to other things. The effectiveness of liposuction supports the idea that adipocyte apoptosis is rare.

I was reading about how the ABCDE diet causes adipocyte hyperplasia. A reason to not excessively bulk is the accompanying increase in fat cell number. The more bulking phases one goes through, the more fat cells and the harder it is to be lean.

What would be interesting to know is if having a higher number of fat cells also increases leptin, since fat cells secrete leptin (I think).

Fat cell number and size are both correlated with leptin expression.
