Caffeine on carb up day

Naxis

New member
On the Mr. X CKD plan, whats the consensus on coffee/espresso on carb up days? Good, bad, indifferent?

Caffiene (or any kind of stimulant) will blunt the leptogenic and glycogenic effects of the carb-up, and the carb-up will blunt the stimulatory effect of the caffiene. Plus, caffiene temporarily reduces insulin sensitivity.

Overall, it's not a productive thing to have on carb-up day.

What about if you pop a couple NYC or ECA 30 minutes prior to training, train 1 hour, then drink your PW shake (with r-ALA) right after your done....will the caffiene be counter productive to the dextose/whey shake?

The half-life of caffiene is more or less 6 hours depending on individual clearance, so yes, I would expect that it would have a small effect on the post-workout shake, probably negligible in the long run when you consider the boost that ECA/NYC give you during the workout. Good tradeoff.

The point I was really trying to get across is that caffiene has no place in a carb-up day, which by definition means large amounts of carbs and calories consumed. You want insulin sensitivity to be highest when you eat like that.
