Business World Question.

New member
So in my management class today we got back evaluations from our group members. This group I was a part of worked together all semester to complete tasks. There were two comments that didn't surprise me, but worried me. One said "stop fighting with group members." The other said "stop cutting people off." Now while taking this in, I realized the two people telling me this were often unprepared and slowed down our group. I have a short tolerance for people not having their shit together. So why I do this is: 1) I have a tendency to cut people off if what they are saying is absolutely ridiculous, and 2) I "fight" (which in actuality means I won't back down if I think I'm right) with group members if what they are trying to do is an awful idea and it will reflect poorly of me. So basically people not having their shit together irritates me and I sometimes get a bit short or rude. But the thing is, and I don't mean to sound like jh1 (cocky), I am usually right since I am more prepared and I am also probably smarter than them.

This worries me somewhat. My question to you all is, are people more prepared in the real world? If not, will my current habits cause detriment to me, or will they be valid or understandable in the real world?

LOL.. get used to it.

I know peeps think of me as this way IRL... but you know what...

I'm succeeding more than any of them.

Sometimes you gotta roll over people when they are slowing your shit down.

Fuck em...

You have to temper yourself IRL, but still... be who you are.. if that makes sense.

Don't let imbiciles drag you down to their level.

Ideally I won't have anyone to report to. But that won't happen for a while. I'm my own person really.

this is the funniest thing i've heard all day....most people will do the absolute minimum necessary to prevent their asses from getting fired.

yes, it will probably be detrimental....things like this need to be dealt with in a tactful manner....frustrating I know, but that's just the way it is. The hardest thing (for me anyway), is to not take the work bullshit personally...and if you do, it's best kept to yourself. head-on is not always the best way to deal with things.

only the strong survive, it's like trying to save someone from drowning. but you wind up at the bottom of the ocean with them...

That's why you throw them a life raft or send a trained dog in. ;)

That way you can help AND win. :)

my suggestion is that you most likely don't realize that you cut people off, but you probably do. One of the most important trates in business is being a good listener. Even if you don't report to anyone directly you will still have to work with your customers in most cases. If your customer isn't prepaired then what would you do? Eventually your personality traits will creep in and you will act out at a critcal moment.

Realize you have these flaws and work on them. Its only going to make you a better person. I speak from experience.

Everytime I see your sig I laugh. hehe - you should put those silly glasses on your daughter and take a cute pic with her...

What the hell?

Do you make fun of old people, slow kids, people in wheel chairs, etc?

My company just fired one of our previous top salespeople because she acted that way with the customers, cutting them off, etc. They sent a sales trainer with her to observe what she was doing because her numbers were suffering - the trainer reported that she just completely was pissing off customers and not even realizing it. They would have an objection or something and she would jump on them.

Nice.

I worked in a pet store for years and dealt with some of the dumbest people around and at their shit while they fed it to me.

I would never do that to a customer, but to someone I expect to have their shit together, who I work with, who's performance is correlated with mine, I would.

A fine line exists between confidence and arrogance. Most arrogant people that are spoken of as you have been would consider themselves to simply be confident people and not trying to be a rude asshole. What you will most likely find as you move through your career is that your patience will increase and your listening skills will improve. You can't go at life with the mentality that you are right all the time or smarter than everyone else. In the business world I see two kinds of people. The people who are ladder climbers and work extremely hard to get promoted (by product is usally an asshole that takes a little longer to realize it) and the people who are happy progressing at a snails pace and collecting a pay check. You have to decide which one you want to be.

Don't listen to the idiots rambling about the only the strong survive and take what is yours. It is all bullshit! At the end of the day you will be working with a team of people and most likely will need to rely on them from time to time. If you are perceived as an asshole know it all you won't get very far!

Uh - no. All I said was I liked your silly glasses. Geeze. Relax, killer.

There it is again!!!

Why are you calling them silly? WHen you see a kid with leg braces do you refer to them as 'Silly Leg Braces' or a an old lady in a wheel chair - do you say... 'I like your silly wheel chair'??

I mean.. WTF??? STACY...

I don't assume I'm smarter than other people, just these two group members because their grades and comments in class reflect it (Keep in mind Angel makes these people I'm talking about look like geniuses). In the real world I wouldn't assume that I'm smarter than others. I would however assume their validity after evaluating and observing their work for some time in the real world.

Your groups are a microcosm of the real world, sadly enough.

We had a client who had a company grossing over 50 million a year in sales that relied on a second hand e-machine to run our EDI software. I had to teach him how to left click, copy and paste over the phone. His "computer guru" was a guy who worked second shift on the assembly line and sold him said e-machine. Fuggin fuggers will spend 50k furnishing their office but won't spend an extra $500.00 to ensure the smooth operation of their business. No wonder most business ventures fail. :worried:

Word.

Life lesson - the majority of people you work with in the "real world" will be annoying, unoriginal, insecure assholes mired (sp?) in mediocrity.

Only thing you can change is YOU - the way you interact with them, the way you communicate with them, the way you understand them.
