Bromo vs Dostinex

Advantages of Dostinex over Bromocriptine

Until Dostinex became available in the U.S., the only other dopamine agonist approved for the treatment of prolactinomas and/or hyperprolactinemia was bromocriptine. However, Dostinex has proved to have a number of advantages over bromocriptine:

Lower incidence of side effects
Twice weekly dosing versus 2-3 times daily for bromocriptine
Generally more effective, especially in those in which bromocriptine was ineffective
Disadvantages of Dostinex over Bromocriptine

Dostinex is twice as expensive as bromocriptine
Dostinex is not available in all countries
Dostinex is not approved for use during pregnancy, and its effects on pregnancy are unknown at this time
Side Effects

The side effects associated with Dostinex usually disappear or are reduced after a few doses. However, if you miss a dose, you may experience some of the original side effects for a short time. The most common side effects of Dostinex are:

Nausea
Dizziness
Sleepiness
Headache
Stuffy nose
Clinical Trial Results

Webster et al., 1994. Comparison of cabergoline and bromocriptine in the treatment of hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea. N Engl J Med 31: 904-909.

459 women with either microprolactinoma or idiopathic hyperprolactinemia were treated with Dostinex or bromocriptine in a double blind study for eight weeks.

Results:

Attainment of normal prolactin levels: 83% on Dostinex 59% on Bromocriptine

Attainment of ovulatory cycles or pregnancy: 72% on Dostinex 52% on Bromocriptine

Return of monthly periods: 93% on Dostinex 84% on Bromocriptine

Dostinex had significantly less side effects with shorter duration and less severity that bromocriptine. Only 3% of women on Dostinex quit treatment because of side effects versus 12% that stopped treatment due to intolerance on bromocriptine.
Biller BMK, et al. 1996. Treatment of prolactin secreting macroadenomas with once weekly agonist cabergoline. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 81: 2338-2343.

15 patients (8 women, 7 men) were treated with Dostinex, once weekly, for 48 weeks.

Results:

A 93.6% reduction in prolactin levels, with normal levels obtained in 73% of patients
5 patients who had previously been unable to achieve normal prolactin levels on other dopamine agonists, achieved normal prolactin levels on Dostinex
gonadal function was restored in all hypogonadal men
75% of premenopausal women with amenorrhea experienced return of gonadal function
11 of 15 patients experienced tumor shrinkage
minimal side effects – no patients discontinued Dostinex because of intolerance
Colao, A. et al. 1997. Long-term and low-dose treatment with cabergoline induces macroprolactinoma shrinkage. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 82(11): 3574-3579.

23 patients with macroprolactinomas Results:

normalization of prolactin levels in 18 patients within 3-6 months at 0.5 mg/week
tumor volume reduction greater than 80% occurred in 61% of patients at the 12-24 month follow-up
the complete disappearance of the tumor occurred after 6 months in one patient and after 1 year of treatment in 5 patients
visual field defects were improved in 90% of patients who experienced them
Conclusions

In general, the data suggests that Dostinex is a better tolerated and a more effective dopamine agonist that bromocriptine in the treatment of prolactinomas. Dostinex effectively lowers prolactin levels and shrinks tumor size in a high percentage of cases, making it a good first option in the treatment of both micro- and macroprolactinomas.

drveejay11,

what type of doses for both are we talking about to be effective against progestin converstion from nando's like fina/deca?

1.25 mg/3 times/Day bromo?
???mg/E3D Dostinex?

thanks.

The prescribed dose is .5mg twice per week. I have been using it for about 1 month with aromsin and I am quite dry though not completely. I am running 1200mg test and 600mg of deca. As far as price I do not know because mine is covered under insurance.

Have you noticed any increase in the ability to orgasm more frequently? I have never used Dostinex, but from what I have read through the reduction of Prolactin levels you can literally orgasm over and over like a Peter North machine. Apparently, prolactin is released following an orgasm and it is the chemical that suddenly makes us thoroughly disgusted with the piece of ass we just banged... regardless of how beautiful she is.

Bump, interested as well.

Is that what causes that feeling?

I thought it was simply Being a Male.

LOL

I thought so too... but that pure disgust and revulsion for the bitch you just came all over is the result of prolactin... who knew?

I thought it was the fact you were just sobering up? God if I had known this I would have had sex with them in the morning also!!!

Orgasm-induced prolactin secretion: feedback control of sexual drive?

Kruger TH, Haake P, Hartmann U, Schedlowski M, Exton MS.

Department of Medical Psychology, University of Essen, 45122 Essen, Germany.

Recent studies from our laboratory have investigated the hormonal response to various forms of sexual stimulation, including film, masturbation, and coitus in both men and women. This series of studies clearly demonstrated that plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations are substantially increased for over 1h following orgasm (masturbation and coitus conditions) in both men and women, but unchanged following sexual arousal without orgasm. Here we discuss evidence suggesting that the PRL response to orgasm may play an important role in the control of acute sexual arousal following orgasm. Supporting this position, chronic elevations of PRL (hyperprolactinemia) produce pronounced reductions in animal sexual activity, and significant reduction of libido and gonadal function in both men and women. These data suggest that PRL may represent a peripheral regulatory factor for reproductive function, and/or a feedback mechanism that signals CNS centres controlling sexual arousal and behaviour. Thus, we propose a theoretical model of the role of PRL as a neuroendocrine reproductive reflex.

Absence of orgasm-induced prolactin secretion in a healthy multi-orgasmic male subject.

Haake P, Exton MS, Haverkamp J, Kramer M, Leygraf N, Hartmann U, Schedlowski M, Krueger TH.

Department of Medical Psychology, University Clinic of Essen, Germany.

In several studies we have recently demonstrated that orgasm induces prolactin secretion in healthy males and females. This suggests that prolactin may form a feedback regulator of the refractory period following orgasm. To examine this position we investigated the prolactin response of a healthy multi-orgasmic male subject. Blood was drawn continuously during masturbation-induced orgasm. The prolactin response of the case-subject was compared with that of nine healthy adult men with a normal refractory period. The case-subject showed no prolactin response to three orgasms. Data from this multi-orgasmic subject support the hypothesized role of plasma prolactin in contributing to sexual-satiation mechanisms

Bingo... I know when I was 18-25 my prolactin serum levels were low. I would squeeze off 6 loads in an hour. Now that I am 32... 3 if I am lucky (of course I last a lot longer now also). I want that 17 year old squirt gun abaout to burst feeling again.

Whoa, so it's prolactin?

I was on Dostinex during my last fina cycle and could hit that ass several times in a row easily and consistently... I couldn't figure out what it was cuz test doesn't usually make me that horny... weird.

Good to hear... I just ordered a pile of it. How much were you taking per week?

I heave read somewhere that if prolactin is too low, it also inhibits libido. So the dosage of dostinex should be figured out quite accurately, maybe with the use of blood tests, like our Peter North case study? Although I could not imagine myself masturbating with a lot of docs around me drawing blood from my free arm. :sperm:

Could you try to dig up that study? After Dostinex use my prolactin was around <1 which is basically nonexistant. I'm a lot less horny on THIS cycle which is exactly the same... I think the Femara has a lot to do with it (instead of Arimidex) but your idea is interesting.

Anyway please post any info you have on low prolactin == low sexdrive.

Thx!
