can anything that small take the place of a 5 speaker surround sound system?

I was in retail for 12 years (recently started a new career) and I have never been impressed with the system. If you have a tiny room that the sound can bounce off of then it sounds ok, but you will never get the impression of sound moving front to back for one simple reason, there are no rear speakers. You are much better off getting a Home Theater in a Box from a good company like Yamaha (some sony's are good too) The one thing that you want to be sure of is that the reciever is the same that you can buy stand alone. Do not get an integrated unit with the DVD player built in, not nearly as good in quality.

Yes there is the downside of running the speaker wires to the back and then mounting them, but the sound is much better. It is also a few hundred dollars cheaper! Happy holidays.
