Bodybuilding genetics and athletic ability??

notpuff

New member
Ive noticed lately that majority of pro bodybuilders are not athleticly gifted i read that arnold, ferrigno, padilla, mike christian all couldnt play ball sports for shit and thats why they were so great in bodybuilding. Whats your opinion

It depends, your gonna find different people with different talents all the time. There are still guys out there that have great bodybuilding genetics and are very good at other sports, most defensive linemen can dunk a basketball and those guys are normally between 250-300 lbs...so they could prob do alright in the iron game if they chose to focus on that. Sprinters is another example, a lot of those guys have the build of an am bodybuilder. Of course a lot of guys lose some athletic ability when they get so big, especially with the standards pro's have to meet today.

What about Kevin Levrone. He reportedly runs a 4.1 40, and he weighs 250lbs or so. With that size, speed and strength, seems like he would have made a great football player. Different body types are obviously better suited for different sports. Here's a good question that I've often thought of: what is the ideal height for a competitive bodybuilder? I'd say 5'10

????

4.1 40? Thats gotta be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, a 300 lb. World Class sprinter. Or maybe you meant to say he did in co9llege when he weighed 200 lb?

No one does a 4.1-40, let alone a f'ing BB. Even Darrell Green, known as the fastest guy in the NFL(in his prime) was clocked at 4.17. He even beat Carl Lewis in the 40.
Besides it takes more than speed and size to make it in pro-ball, look at how many college track stars that "try" to be wide-outs....but can't catch the ball.

I think that once you become pro, you are already so damn big that your athletic abilities required for agile movements are going to be considerably lower due to the size and lack of flexibility.

Lets face it, if you can't extend your arm out fully because your bicept goes from your shoulder to your wrist it's going to be pretty hard to have a nice fluid relaxed shot. Now playing football is going to be a little bit easier for BB'rs to play simply because not every posistion requires the ability to throw, shoot or jump through the roof. However I would rather have a 300lb body builder on the the offensive line than a 330lb tub of shit that just takes up space. Problem is would they have the cardio to last a game of getting beat on and running up and down the field.

just my 2 cp,

Jdabs

personally I feel that an athletic person makes a better bodybuilder than people who are not athletically inclined, for one like myself, since I have great coordination and athletic skill, I am a much better bodybuilder and my body shows that, I see guys in the gym that are kinda big, but they cant even jump a box side to side so they are just uncoordinated as hell, and not athletic at all, and that is a disadvantage in training. And SOFLAGUY, there is a guy in the NFL that runs a 4.0, he is a wide receiver for the dallas cowboys!!!!!! I think and feel that uncoordiated unathletic people are clutzes, they may lift weights but they arent going to be as efficient as a real athletic person who has skills in all sports growing up!

40yd-times are bogus

(sorry for wasted boardspace but I just had to argue this)

CN1, 40yd-times are always B.S. to psyche out the opposition and/or not accurately calculated. So not a flame here...

But here are the facts:

The best sprinters in the world(ie Maurice Greene,Donovan Bailey, etc) take 0.15s to react off the blocks. Their top speed is not achieved until about 40-50m into the sprint. In fact, in 60m/100m sprints at the 30m it is extemedly rare to even be at 4sec!(Usually 4.1). At 40m, they are up to 4.8 - 4.9s. Now I know 40yd is shorter than 40m, but you get my point...it is not possible to run a flat 4.0-40. I'll give you the 20-page paper that discusses the biomechanics/mathematics of human speed if still not convinced. ;)

BTW, here are the world records:

6.39s for the 60m(MoGreene)
9.79s for the 100m(MoGreene)
19.32 for the 200m(MJohnson)

Even though I've been busting my ass in the gym for ten years, I have the genetics to be a fucking professional badmitton hero. Thank god for gear.

Actually, I don't find this true. I've read countless times that Arnold got into bodybuilding from training legs for soccer, after a while he liked it better. Also Mike Katz, and Big Lou both played football. I think Katz played for the Jetts (he left when he got injured), and Lou played for a Canadian team. Ronnie was a football player all through college. Some people are just good at some sports, some aren't. Bodybuilders are no exception, simple as that.
