Q: Should I eat something before I work out—like an energy bar?

A: This depends on what your goal is. Now, if your only concern is athletic performance, you should consume carbohydrates—like an energy bar or a sports drink—before, during, and after your physical activity.

However, if your goal is to lose fat and gain muscle, I do not recommend eating before your workout. This is a mistake many people make. You see, if you supply your body with carbohydrates to use as fuel while you're exercising, you will slow down fat loss. That's why I recommend, for maximum fat-burning effects, you exercise on an empty stomach.

I get sick if I don't eat something before working out. But everyone is different and alot of the people at my gym don't ever eat before and are fine.

today I just started having pre workout shake about 1hr before lifting in the AM and it felt so good:)

Cant train if i dont eat

If i dont eat something a least 1/2 hour before training, especially cardio i feel like crap and faint

I usualy eat fruit before hand, dunno but it seems to help

I can go either way, although I'd rather eat before hand.
If I feel I need to lose fat quicker, than I'll do my morning workout before my first meal. I always eat before I do legs, however, or else I won't have any energy.

cardio in the am = empty stomach (I have no problems with this)

lifting weights in the pm = I ALWAYS eat real food before if not I'm only taking up space in the gym (yes I have tried to lift without eating and it was not pretty)

If you can only workout once a day it's a toss up-

I think it would be better to eat, lift then cardio. (I've seen this routine posted somewhere on the womens board)

I have done cardio then had a protein shake waited 30 or more minutes to lift. I didn't like this routine because I never felt I could lift as much.
