I have napigator and winmx, both are 'ok' but I was hoping there was something better out there. Specifically looking for hiphop/rap type music if that makes any sort of difference.

I still can't find anything near what napster was...

I prefer audiogalaxy since you can specify quality. MP3's are bad enough already w/o getting some crappy 128kbps garbage.

There's always usenet. I've got about 4300 albums from having downloaded from the mp3 groups over the last 2 or 3 years. For a while, I was downloading about 50 albums per day so you can definitely find a ton of stuff on usenet.

KaZaA BaBy!!

To me Kazaa is better than Napster ever was. Plus you can download movies and videos. I've got all the Seinfelds and Friends episodes along with several movies. I also heard Scorpion King sucked ass but I still want to see it, so I downloaded it (still havent watched it).

Wow ... how much drive space do those take up?

I'm at about 13000 tracks now and one of my 80 gig drives is almost filled from it.

As for a place to get them, depends on what you're looking for. I find AudioGalaxy to be the best for older stuff and singles. But for new albums nothing beats the IRC (new as in not older then 2-3 weeks tops).

I like IRC too, but I haven't been on in a long while. Dalnet servers were always having problems synching up and I could only get on one or two EFnet servers.

One advantage usenet has is quality. These days most tracks that are posted to the mp3 groups are 192k or better. The trend is towards 256k and 320k, which is annoying, as well as r3mix VBR which is really nice quality if you're ok with VBR.

I have a 60GB drive and a 40GB drive, but 90% of my stuff is burned as mp3s on, at the moment, 428 CDs. It'll take you forever to burn 80GBs, though (been there!). Maybe you're thinking about a DVD burner? I think I would if I were in that predicament. You're a drive crash away from losing 13000 tracks!

I know what you mean about higher quality, I usually don't keep anything at less then 192 anymore. As for my collection I've got about 60% of it on cd, I've just been lazy lately and haven't burned anything. Just picked up a plextor 24x writer, so it should go pretty quick :).

What news groups do you usually check for stuff? (I'm more into whole albums then singles).

I pay for an account with Giganews, so I get about 2 weeks retention and excellent completeness on posts. I check the following groups on a pretty regular basis:

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1970s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1980s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1990s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000s
alt.binaries.sounds.country.mp3
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.beatles
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.celtic
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.indie
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.classical

Most of what I download these days is from the indie group.

Unless someone specifically requests a single, just about everything that's posted to the mp3 groups is complete albums.

Of course, if you're into porn, movies, apps, games and warez there's a ton of that to be found as well.

There's a whole yEnc thing going on in the binaries groups on Usenet now, so you need to be sure you have the latest Agent or Gravity newsgroup browsers.
