Best hardware for blocking hackers/viruses/adware/worms....

Do you have an old pc laying around? You could put Smoothwall on it if you did. Or you could get Astaro free with a home user license. They would take a bit more work, but they are also good.

norton is great for virus/worms/etc as is zonealarm pro, but as of a few months ago when i looked at this, they both sucked for adware/spyware.

Microsoft has a free adware blocker thats pretty good tho to supplement either (search microsoft antispyware)

Are you still using internet explorer? I've had ZERO spyware/viruses/trojans/etc since I installed mozilla firefox and zone alarm. Seriously. Don't spend money on hardware.

Download mozilla and zone alarm.

Thanks but I lost my faith in software to handle important work since I do so much business on the computer.

I was going to spend hundreds on a Cisco system but they are trickier to deal with. One can go to school to deal with Cisco systems.

Astaro is an enterprise level firewall. If you are serious about wanting some protection, you should look at it. They even make a nice little appliance you could just plug in.

Zone alarm is way to memory intensive. You really don't need a firewall - just a good anti-virus and spyware blocker. I recommend Symantec products in conjunction with Spybot S&D. I download lots of movies, images, and misc. things and rarely have a problem. The key is keeping things up to date.

Also, Spybot comes with teatimer which, in real time, blocks about 1700 applications from running the background of your computer. These programs tend to slow everything down on top of recording information (spying). I really reccomend this program.

I prefer linksys.

Perhaps I am wrong but that strikes me as an entry level splitter essentially.

Splitting is OK....but security is my bag these days.

My desk top got zombied last month and it is costing me a lot due to lost files and capabilities.

My lap top is being heavily targeted by viruses and adware despite having updated Norton firewall and virus protection and weekly scans.

It detects stuff but isn't good at removing the worst stuff it seems. Unless you follow exacting pain in the ass instructions.

What has your laptop done to deserve this??

What exactly are you doing.......? I doubt there is some conspiracy where people are hacking into your specific computer and planting shit, or whatever it is your saying.

Your website? I can see that - but not personal computer

Hardware solution? Just about any DSL/Cable router is gonna have a hardware firewall. After I installed a Linksys router, the number of hits recorded by my ZoneAlarm software firewall went down dramatically.

I still use MS Internet Explorer, along with a non-MS e-mail client for my POP mail, with Norton Anti-Virus, free ZoneAlarm, and have Ad-Aware and Spybot installed, as well as the MS anti-spyware thingy. And I keep up with all XP Pro security patches and upgrades. I have never been infected with a virus or had a malicious spyware infection.

A fellow named jnuts, who enjoys a very high sicurity clearance, told me this a couple weeks before my desk top got zombied:

"Your computer is going to get zombied real soon."

Shit....I'll just buy super cheap computers now.

I don't feel like I'm doing anything special, but I never have problems. I think people really have to TRY to get the bad viruses and spyware attacks. Or they do a lot of porn...

That's because you ignore simple advice:

-- an unpatched XP box connected to the net with nothing protecting it can be infected within MINUTES.

1) Run an XP login without admin permissions.
2) Use Firebird instead of Internet Explorer
3) Use Thunderbird instead of Outlook / Outlook Express.
4) Use an anti-virus that auto-updates signatures
5) Run adaware/spybot on a damn near daily basis

4) You've been zombied before - I highly recommend that you just Fdisk that fucker and start over.

5) You are correct that my clearance is high :)

I see that somebody else mentioned Smoothwall. I'm using a fork from that called IPCop as my firewall - it will run on any piece o shit computer you have laying around - through 2 Nics in it and you'll be running real quick - and you'll have an idea who keeps trying to bust into your machine.

If you have a spare machine around...Say fuck it, go over to Ubuntulinux.org and download their distro. Learn to use Gimp. Turn to the Linux side :) I bet that box doesn't get zombied.

Friend of mine who is the tech guy for a regional ISP was ICP-ing with some anonymous gov't spook one night when the spook said "I'm sorry, but I just have to to this..." and immediately my friend's server went BSOD.

What is ICP-ing and BSODing?

IPC is a typo for IRC. :( "Internet Relay Chat" It was an early chat protocol sort of like AIM. BSOD = "Blue Screen of Death". In other words, the spook did something that caused my friend's server to crash hard.

Generally thing like viruses / adware are initiated by the user clicking on something in the web browser. Therefore a firewall will not protect you from that. I virus scanner which has an "auto protect" feature would work for that. Chewy is correct in that IE gives more opportunity for malicious code to be installed on your computer through ole / activex. Then the unsuspecting user clicks "yes" and installs the malicious code on thier computer.

As far as hackers , I use FreeBSD ipfw in a stateful setup + natd to filter packets and port scans on my network. The only port open is natd and if there is no automatic rules in it's tables to allow that packet in , the packet is dropped. Therefore my firewall does not respond to even port scans.
With dynamic rules, the firewall opens and closes holes based on the internal network asking for a connection out and closes the hole once the connection is over. Therefore there are no openings in the firewall, and network address translation is picking which packets to proxy back in and blocks the rest.

If interested I will send you a sample setup

One last piece of incormation,
To scan your computer for viruses, open up IE and go here

Good posts yo :) You are 100% as in most shit happens from the user clicking on some bullshit. The last time I had to rebuild it was from my dumb ass who knows better clicking on some shit from limewire....even then following my normal rules and trying to run trendmicro - start trendmicro and then my computer restarted....completely fucked up. Luckily I found some knowledgeable bros like yourself (techguys.com , good stuff if you need help) and fixed it.

Most people are clueless in this matter which sucks...I had a friend who was ready to throw his computer away and buy a whole new one, he mentioned it to me, I came over and 2 hours later his shit was good as new....I feel sorry for the regular consumer who don't realize what's going on.....hella cash outta the pocket :(

I'm figuring out what to do with the computer that got zombied.

I tried the System Restore route and the Recovery Discs that came with the computer.

I need a program that scans email before I open it.
