fuck i'm sore today, hurts to walk, harder yet to climb stairs.
i've been tweaking my sq workout, doing oly sqts for reps as opposed to the heavy weight/low rep combo.
is it better to rest and relax...or should i keep moving?
i took about a 3 mile hike, still feel crippled

Some light activity to get some blood flowing and some light stretching are a good thing. You don't want to do anything that is gonna put more stress on them, but it will help to facilitate recovery if you can get some blood moving through them.

I've found light activity helps better than resting does - like riding a stationary bike.....hiking would be too strenuous - but simple walking would do......

Both. Time heals all, but real light activity, light stretching of the sore area, and massaging the sore area (to increase blood flow to it) all help to get rid of the feeling.

dudes i'm talking about soreness so servere that massaging is out of the picture, waay to sensitive for that.
i hiked so hopefully that got some blood moving.
i must have hit a weak spot...i've been squatting about 5 yrs, most of which has been pl style...super wide stance, bar low on traps, only just past 90 degrees. usually for no more than 6 reps
friday i did super narrow stance, bar high on traps, ass-2-floor for sets of ten.
really worked me, and i was doing less than 50% of what my 1rm
weakness

you're gonna be hurting once you get back at it.
untill then, make sure you rotate frequently to avoid nasty bed sores

I didn't bitch this much when I had a fucking herniated disc for over a year!

Pick3 can help you with the massage

take a walk. It will hurt initially but after 10 minutes of walking your legs will warm up. After that do some light stretches.

After a couple of hours of doing this you will feel exactly the same way as you did before. So you should give it time too.

It is strangly a good feeling. It is not like you get sore from a work out everyday.

i've been SQ'ing 3 times a week. i woke up today and felt like Fred G. Sanford. the G stands for goddam my back hurts!

Oh, I get it now, there isn't shit you can do. It will just take time some time. You are badly broken down, nothing trivial will make much difference. Just enjoy the pain, for it is means to an end. I tried to get all philosophical there, I don't think it helped.

AR

bands.... use them.

Nourishment.

The new type of squats may or may not be better for you, but IMO it's the stretching of your legs that is making you more sore than usual and not the "better" workout. I believe "overstretching" or just stretching in general past their normal range during a rep is what gets people sore.

I get bad DOMS, I've discovered that once it's there, you're screwed. The only thing that helps is LIGHT activity, stretching, hot showers. I suppose an epsom salt bath would help.

IMO, the best way to treat it is to PREVENT it. Warming up sufficiently and stretching, especially before you do legs, is really critical. I have found that BCAAs and ALA and green foods/drinks (wheat grass juice) help a lot, but that's my body chemistry.

The newest theory about DOMS is that it is caused by oxidative stress, so anything that you can do take as an antioxidant should help.

I find the best way to deal with it is to stop being a pussy.

Or advil.

I totally forgot about Advil! Advil helps!

Don't take any NSAIDS bro, they inhibit protein synthesis by blunting the natural inflammatory cycle and stopping the COX-2 enzyme from doing it's job.

to what degree?

Food, rest, ease back into activity.

if youre so sore that you can even massage, ive found that frequent light contractions during the day (ie flex your thighs) to get blood moving and stretch the muscle a bit really help out. you do feel like a girl doing pelvic floor exercises, but so what ;)

this guy knows what's up

AR is important

oh damn gambino, I know what you mean when you say that even light massaging is out of the question. I bet even pressing your finger into the quad feels deadly. I used to have this same problem (when I could squat) and I would end up nearly crippled with outrageous pain. walking to the bathroom would be a task. you need to do what you can to get some blood flowing, and what GD suggested would bea start until the severe pain starts to decrease. then, when you can tolerate it, very light cardio i.e. walking or something like that will really feel good once your muscles get all warmed up (at thi point, the pain is almost not even there - until you stop, and your muscles cool down and then the pain sets in again LOL). and then the strethcing throughout the day as tolerable. those stretches ive found REALLY are pain mixed with pleasure,

Silver, teach me, how would this be bad? Are you saying that any protein you've eaten after taking an NSAID would basically go unutilized as long as the antiinflammatory effect is working? Is that even possible?!?

NSAIDS basically shut down your bodies natural inflammatory cycle, our bodies respond to inflammation by trying to fix it. If you blunt that signal within your body you are hindering your recovery. This is closely tied to the COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzyme being unable to express itself. For your body to adapt it must sense a stress, NSAIDS don't allow your body to do that efficiently. I believe aleve is the only thing doesn't inhibit protein synthesis. I don't take any pain killers. Pain is there for a reason, to keep us from hurting ourselves and to allow our bodies to better adapt to the stresses we subject them to. It's like the check engine soon light coming on in your car and ignoring it.
