... is possibly the worst decision I've made in my entire life so far.
Once upon a time, Citibank online had a cool promotion going on where they would send you a free Palm Pilot ($200 value) if you opened an online account with them and paid two bills. Naturally, I proceeded to do so. I applied and sent my deposit out on Sept. 12th. Finally, today, I receive the PIN # for the ATM card I received a few days ago, and a bunch of meaningless account information that no one ever reads. I scurry over to Citibank's online banking service, enter my account # and pin, and proceed to get told "sorry fucker you can't pay any bills because you have a block on your account, LOL!!!!"
Nice.
So I call the salute-to-minimum-wage customer service number. Miraculously, I get a representative who seems to know what she's doing. She skillfully told me that my account was still in the verification process. Apparently, it takes longer than 10 days to conclude that I live where I really do live despite the fact that I sent them a phone bill with my name and address on them, in addition to the mandatory social security number. What are they using this information for? Ass-wiping supplies? It's not that hard to go "oooh! address match name! verify!"
Oh yeah, they're also "verifying" my employment. What? Phone systems are down? It takes more than 10 days to call my boss and say "Hi does Warik work there?" It's not like anyone else has been calling my boss.
Besides, since when do you need to be employed to open a bank account? Wtf? They don't let little kids open accounts with their allowance anymore? I opened an account when I was 13 years old and deposited my allowance every week. I didn't have a job back then.
As if the fact that they only pay a pathetic 0.50% interest rate wasn't enough encouragement for me to close the account immediately after receiving my Palm Pilot. Nitwitted accounting procedures makes a nice complement.
