I was quite pleased with my locals who stayed and risked thier lives to rescue people , the elderly and get them to shelters (of limited safety) during katrina. I was able to go back this weekend for the second time and survey the damage to my hometown and see who had stayed in town to rescue folks. Many of my running buddies were "first responders" and they guided rescue and military personel to family, friends and what not. Over all, the situation that was reported on TV was 2 -3 times as bad and screwed up as it really was. The situation in the superdome was very bad but still not as bad as the stories posted.
Now it's recovery time and everyone is getting thier house gutted and roof repaired. Businesses are starting to reopen. No more checkpoints in town, but there was still one in Plaquimines parish to get towards the mouth of the river. Alos of the trash needs to be picked up but the nasty stuff along highway 90 (the highway where people were living and getting supplies) has been cleaned up. Still many neighborhoods such as New orleans east , gentilly, lakeview, 9th ward , are still in ruin and will remain that way for atleast a year. I'm sure there will be some cheaper property in those areas as house gutting and cleaning has to be one in those dwellings as well because many folks haven't come back (and may never come back) I really wanna see the locals get the 17th street levee repaired but if there are jobs in NO now that businesses are reopening and people not there to fill positions, I may move back home.
The locals that I know were in good spirits and still not how to have a good time even after this total disaster where all parties are at fault. To quote Kelder Summers of Old School 102.9 "We believe in our leaders and we will rebuild"
