I'd been doing a low-carb diet for a while and had been stalled for a couple weeks so I decided to give CKD a try... I'm mid-way through my first week and I busted through that plateau like it was nothing. Just a couple of general questions I guess...

1) I assume you guys weigh yourself once a week to track progress... when is this? I carb-up on Saturday, so I'll probably weigh myself Saturday morning.

2) How much do you guys gain after your carb-up?

3) What plan are you following? I'm just using Mr. X's worksheet to plot out my cals and ratios and using HST as my workout routine.

4) What supps are you using? I've read that people use ALA to help kick them into ketosis quicker, but I haven't read enough about it to feel confident about it. Anyone have any input on this? I'm using an ECA stack now and it seems to be helping quite a bit.

I'd weight in before carb-up. I don't remember how much I'd gain. Used Mr. X's plan

ALA seemed to work as I noticed I got into ketosis pretty fast while using it

weight gain after the carb-up is mostly water, so don't go nuts over it. remember that every gram of glycogen is bound to 4 grams of water.

ALA does work to speed your entry into ketosis. r-ALA is even better.
you should also use either one of these during your carb-up to shuttle glycogen into the muscles instead of the liver.

Do you have any links to more info about this? I've tried a couple google searches but haven't found anything worthwhile. Either it's a sales pitch, not bb related or it's WAY over my head.

If not, could you post some general how/why it works info? For instance, why do I want to shuttle glycogen to my muscles instead of my liver?

Thanks.

i stay off the scale. my weight fluctuates 3-10 pounds

3-10 pounds...then loose 5-6 pounds in 3 days

just search here on the board, you will get tons and tons of information on ALA and r-ALA. you might also want to research CKD and keto diets more. try to find that thread which heorgie24 mentioned. i believe it was quite good.

in a nutshell, you want to shuttle more glycogen into your muscle cells, because once your liver is full, any additional glycogen will be redirected to the fat cells.

As far as weighing I'd suggest 2x a week, once before carb-up and once after. That way you have a better idea of what is really going on. If you weigh before carbup then you are kidding yourself because your muscles lack glycogen so the weight isn't really accurate. If you stopped dieting and went back to a maintenance diet you will gain some of that water weight back.

Weight directly after a carbup is misleading too as you will be holding more water than you usually can so you'll heavier than normal. By weighing both before and after you will have an accurate idea each week of how much glycogen you are storing during your carbup and you can track if you're making progress or not. I used to carbup on Saturdays so I would weigh myself on Saturday and Sunday morning. So long as both numbers are going down each week you're on the right track.

Just remember your pre carbup weight isn't accurate and you will gain a few pounds when coming back to a normal diet. It will only be water but some have a mental problem seeing any type of weight come back.
