ATTN: Mechanic Bors.... Question

ok here goes.. never come across this issue, doesnt seen like a big deal to me....

on my GrandPrix Early 90's model... i started to hear a clunk in the rear of my car. so i inspected it, and its the rear stabilizer link. broken...
now the sway bar and links are small... unlike the front of a vehicle.
the link looks like a peice of rubber and that it wasnt doing much anyway.

my question is about how serious of a matter i have on my hands here?
i know it should get fixed, but how URGENT is it?

Your handling will be unpredictable if it's not put together the way the factory intended. You may find yourself in an emergency situation and need to take evasive action to avoid a collision, that's not the time to discover that your back end comes around when you slam on the brakes and turn to the right.

the sway bar is like 1/2 inch thick, and the end links are like a cut of rubber slab, 1' by 1'inch
i KNOW its gotta get fixed, but how much does this bar do??

theres everything intact holding the wheel in place, how would it just pull out??

It's not that urgent, but you should replace the end link or the whole sway bar if needed.

Swar bars attach the chasis to the frame and help to cut down on body roll during cornering.

The front sway bar is almost always larger than the rear due to the engine being up front, which is turn places most of the lateral stress of cornering in that area of the car.

Exception being a mid/rear engine car.

With one end link being broken, you are putting additional stress on the rear sway and the good endlink.

Normally, the only other connection of the sway bar to the vehicle is in the form of a bushing and bracket that attached to the undercarriage of the car.

Bottom line, is fix it or you may have to replace the whole rear sway and could possibly damage the undercarriage mounts.

If you let it go long enough you'll also mess up your tread wear on the tires and your shocks could end up rubbing against the undercarriage. That's what started happening when my front link popped out. Even one of them gone can cause some peripheral damage if left unfixed long enough.

I was going to say the same thing thread wear on the tires will be bad. Handling will be different. Your rear end takes a beating and that will break it.

lol thanks guys
i was thinking along the same lines...
i dont drive like a demond so i think it should be ok... they'll both get replaced very shortly

same thing happened with my trans am.. in the front... but thats when i worked in a shop., parts cost me 30bucks, and 15mins labour :)

Speaking of your 1/2 inch thick sway bar.......Did you ever hit that red head that worked at the pool hall.
