(Asylum: Batman vs. Superman) - June 21, 2002 draft script by Andrew Kevin Walker (revised by Akiva Goldsman)

"Bruce Wayne has hung up the Batsuit five years ago. Clark Kent is the best man at his wedding to the beautiful and lovely Elizabeth. And while Gotham's richest man is at the happiest moment in his life, Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, isn't doing so well. Lois, his long-suffering girlfriend, has finally given him the boot."

Below is the most recent plot revision:

A few years after becoming Batman, Bruce Wayne decides that his vigilante career is not working and ultimately retires from the mantle of Batman. After his engagment to his new fiance, Elizabeth, the Joker brutally murders her, and Bruce is left alone with sorrow and grief. He returns to the role of Batman and follows the Clown Prince of Crime to Metropolis, where Superman unintentionally falls into the picture. It seems that Joker and Lex Luthor are pitted against both the heroes, and it all comes down to a battle between the Last Son of Krypton and the Dark Knight.

This film is said to take around the same time; following the end of Batman Begins and continuing from Superman: The Movie. Both Superman and Batman were young, since those were origin stories, with Batman being around 23 to 26, and Superman somewhere in his late twenties-early thirties physical-wise (with the mind of a 30-year old). This film will tie into both franchise's and the comics continuity. This plot has some major elements in common with Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, which climaxes in a fight between Batman and Superman. In that comic Superman also fears that Bruce Wayne has gone "over the line." The Dark Knight Returns along with Alan Moore's Watchmen forced the publishing company DC to reinvent their superhero universe along with Superman and Batman's relationship so that the previous best friends for many years turned unwilling allies who don't agree with each other's methods. For the last few years DC has successfully published the Superman/Batman book in which the two characters team-up as co-stars. Two alternate versions of the characters also clash over conflicting ideals in Superman: Red Son.

As for Batman vs. Superman, Peterson had something to say about the plot. Obviously from the title, the two will follow comic book tradition and fight before teaming up, perhaps reluctantly.

"Superman stands for what is powerful, clear, bright, noble and just," Peterson told The Hollywood Reporter, "Batman is dark, obsessive and vengeful. Because they are so different, they will inevitably end up clashing. It will be a battle of the titans."

Peterson continued, "They both go through some kind of a crisis. Superman has an unwavering belief in what is right and wrong and it's just not that simple anymore in today's world, while Batman is on a path of self-destruction. He reacts to an act of incredible violence in a way that almost puts him over the edge."

While some of Peterson's interpretation may spark fan debate (and hey, isn't that fun anyway?), it still seems like the guy cares about what really makes the characters work. It's a far cry from producer Jon Peters describing Superman as "the ultimate outsider," with Nicolas Cage adding, "…he's a beautiful freak."

No way this movie could be credible. The only way batman would fight superman was if he had something to do with his parents' deaths. And batman could never defeat superman unless all of his weapons/armor was infused with kryptonite. Then he might have a chance.

I understand what you said but in the same context, wouldn't Superman be a flop as an icon then. Because there would be no point in pitting anyone against him because he is of course Superman. I mean Lex has nothing on Bruce Wayne/Batman, Lex is just a man, but he is Supes most noteable arch enemy. I think it's plausable, but finding a solid reason for the two to conflict will be the key.

I take it you never read the Dark Knight graphic novels? Bats synthesized kryptonite to weaken Superman prior to hand to hand.

Very true. As long as it's better than Freddy Vs. Jason!
