To anyone out there that has Asthma. What medication are you taking to prevent asthma during physical activity. I take singular and clariton but lately its just not cutting it for me and im having problems with my asthma during my sprints and grappling. Any suggestions

thanks and God bless

I also have asthma - mild. I think everyone experiences it at different levels. I have never had an astham attack per say but my breathing leaves alot to be desired per my allergist. If the meds you are taking are not working, your allergist or doc needs to know this ASAP. There are alot of different meds out there. Asthma is a serious condition if you ask me. My allergist takes it seriously and wants check ups every 3 months to manage what meds i take to make sure its working. I'd call or make an appointment to discuss other better options. Thats my 2 pesos

I can write a paper several pages long regarding my experience training through asthma.

What type of doc is your regular physician? I had been going to a local clinic and my longterm regular physician was one who specialized in "internal medicine". After several weeks of NOT being able to breath nor sleep w/out having to resort to my emergency inhaler (Proventil) and a year of taking Prednisone, I decided enough was enough.

I contacted a local "allergy specialist" and have thanked god that I did ever since. This was a month ago. They found out at my first appointment that my lung capacity was sitting at 54% and that this past year, I had been using only 60% of my lung capacity (even during strongman training/comps). The medication I was using was: Asmacort and Proventil (inhalers), Prednisone (10mgs a day or more if necessary). My skin (I have acute dermatitis) condition was getting worse as well.

My new doc (my new saviour) outlined a new goal: that in 6-months the only asthma medication I'll be taking will be Singulair. Right now, I'm using Advair (500/50); tapering off process, so that I'll be taking the 100/50 Advair. As well as one tab a day of Singulair.

A week after my first appointment with this new doc, I rack pulled 375lbs for 2-reps in the gym and didn't have to use my emergency inhaler once. My skin is improving. Most importantly, I CAN BREATH. Second appointment, they performed a allergy test to see what I was allergic to. Heh. I'm allergic to EVERYTHING. Next up: I'm strongly considering allergy shots so that I no longer will have to take ANY medication and I'll be getting a flu shot next week.

My advice to you: Go see a allergy specialist. Look at your home, is it currently problematic to your asthma? Carpeting, pet dander, dusty/dirty vents, do you have dustmite covers in your bedding? And so on.

I have found that to make it so that asthma does not affect my athletic performance, I have to seriously take a look at how my home affects my asthma. Another thing: drink plenty of water. I notice issues when I'm dehydrated. If you eat late at night, this can cause issues too. Especially carbs late at night. I've had to modify my eating due to my asthma; it's a bitch when you're in a gaining cycle, too. Ya just gotta be smarter about your diet.

Oh, did I forget anything else? Let me know. And I hope this all helps!

I use Advair and it is amazing the results I have had. I really don't use my other inhaler but maybe every other month. So if your meds are not working check with the Dr. there are many options out there.
