Army should get A 10 Warthog....

Helicopters have a poor track record for their ability to take heavy fire and take out tanks and artillery. The Army lost 5000 choppers in Vietnam alone. The USSR also had poor luck with the Hind choppers during their Afghanistan battles. The Apaches got torn up pretty badly during Desert Storm I and II.

By comparison, about 180 A 10s were used during Desert Storm I and they took out 1/2 of the Iraqi tanks while enjoying truly excellent survivability. They are an extremely tough beast to disable and their 30mm guns will chew up a tank like it was made of plastic.

There are coordination problems with having the Air Force do work at the request of the Army. The Army has to deal with the tanks, artillery, and machine guns. The Army should have the proper equipment to take out the tanks and artillery. The A 10 Warthog is almost ideal for these missions.

It is time for the military to set aside their competitive strivings and do what is best for achieving military objectives while minimizing losses of our troops. The Army should get some A 10s.

Ahh...the vaunted Fairchild Republic's A-10 Warthog..... :)

I actually wrote a paper on it. That 30mm centrally mounted Vulcan cannon w/ round selector(3 types) is probably the best
weapon for Air-to-mud engagements.

Damn ugly fuselage though...lol But its titanium cockpit is a gooddamn tank. It can stop 5.56mm NATO rounds.

Really? Damn... :)

A hell of a lot of ideas came out of germany regarding military hardware...specially during the first 2 World Wars. Same with the old USSR. Their T-55's were amazing(For the time).

Rudel wrote a book in the 60's I think were he described how a modern tank buster should be built around a big gun (same way German's Stukas and Ju-88 were for this purposes). So I bet Fairchild had a talk with him before making the original design for the A-10.

Ahh...the vaunted Stuka Dive bomber...an integral part of germany's vaunted "Blitzkrieg" style of war.
Damn.....I haven't read up on my military history in such a long time....lol
I mainly researched planes though. Specially the old Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, B-17 Flying Fortress etc...

I'm on the opposite, I've research and still do about german warplanes. They had years of advance.

Hans

...Rudel was BADASS...

had something like 500 confirmed tank kills..

that fucker actually landed in a combat zone to rescue a fellow pilot.

German pilots in WW2 were some badass motherfuckers.

Well you do have some points there.

Certainly the 11th Aviation Regiment had a very bad day when they attacked the Medina division of the Republican Guard at the Karbala gap on March 24th. Depending whose account you read 27 or 33 of the 35 AH64-D Apaches were rendered unflyable.

Considering how pitiful the opposition was it sure doesn't look good to have a flagship project perform badly.

This was the one and only attack made by the army without air-support and the fact that it was the one and only failure of the war must really chap their asses. The remaining Apaches were never allowed out to play after that without being chaperoned by A-10's. I'll bet the Airforce brass busted some balls after that one.

Hate to say it, but most german and japanese pilots were addicted to methamphetamines quite badly.

Its this latter reason that caused some japanese pilots to basically lose their minds(Amphetamines CAN cause psychosis)
and then do the suicide crash-into-carriers thing.

Check this out:

http://www.panzerfaust.com/knights/rudel.htm

The guy was actually the only german to ever receive the Knights Cross with Golden Oak leaves Swords and Diamonds.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rudel flew 2,530 missions. He is accredited for knocking out 500 tanks, 800 other military vehicles, 70 landing craft, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer, 4 armored trains, and an unknown but significantly large number of anti-aircraft guns and artillery pieces. He was shot down more than 30 times by enemy forces. He was directly involved in 6 rescue missions to save members of his own squadron from imprisonment. His official medal, the highest in all of Germany, was officially designated as: “Golden Oak Wreaths with Swords and Diamonds top the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

oh and after having his leg amputated he was back again.

Holy shit.......lol

Thats absolutely incredible. That guy just wasn't human. :)

torpedoes

Funny part is those old torpedoes didn't have any kind of magnetic guidance packages attached to them in order to navigate/find to the target.

He must have had to essentially do a kamikaze run straight at the battleship/Cruise. Then, when he was in a direct line of sight he dropped the torpedo. This would make him very, very vulnerable to AA fire.

LOL....he must have had ice water running through his veins.

i definately think they could stand to chll out on the numbers of apache;s maybe.....they ahve to be real careful because the explosion damage up close can cause the rotor blades on the apache to shatter and as a result they canonly fire properly in a certain way

also iraqs one big flat sand thing innit? no suprise there....but just imagine some helicopter hiding behind a cliff line, radar spotting its targets then popping up 5km away and firing its 16 missles all at the target

the hinds did real;y well until the muhajadeen got their hands on some stingers...presumably the iraqi's had a few lying around too

I think my 500 sheet stack of paper could stop the 5.56mm NATO. That is a .223 round....perfect for prairie dogs and such.

How the hell did I miss this thread? I get your point but A-10's are getting phased out! But the "Fying Tank" has been one of the most succesful weapons even with its little amount of use in War, that has been produced for the US military!

They quit making it years ago. The National Guard got almost 200 of them. Screwed up decision......the Army could best utilize it.

Big mistake to phase them out, in my opinion.

The A-10 has been getting phased out since Desert Storm. It's a shame because it's an awesome airplane. It was my #1 choice during pilot training. Alas, none were available for my class :(

With regards to the army owning them, that's a whole big mess with doctrinal implications. The AF does not only does the deep battle, but has a req't to do CAS for gnd forces. Getting the army fixed wing assets that can take the fight deep is a messy political fight.... cause it's about money.

Well I never saw you as an A-10 pilot!:D Military, Money and politics gotta mix but they don't!:(

My personal favourite is the F-111 Aardvaark

Only Mach 2 Bomber in the US's arsenal.
