Are you a Computer genius?

If so....I have got a question.....:)

I have a question about Internet Explorer 6.....I defragmented my computer. And now, even after reinstalling IE 6, it will not respond? Actually....after clicking to open the page it takes literally 10+ minutes to connect...and AT least 10 minutes to access any links? Most often giving me an error and bumping me from the system?

Any ideas?

IE 6 sucks ass...

delete it and install IE 5.5 or 5.0 if you can find it.

I ran ME for a while, and it just kinda ran itself into the ground after about 3 months. I went back to 98SE, much more stable, IMHO.

have you tried reintalling your dialup? Does it use a dialer or connect through Windows?

did you run a scandisk too?

Using Norton System Works to optimize your defrag and cache?

--It uses a dialer....the only thing that isn't working now is IE...netscape...:( still works

Yes, I used Norton when defragmenting.....

and Windows ME...was what was installed on the computer when I go it...

Is there any Hope?

What's the error message you're getting?

And I'm not sure you can downgrade IE6 with WinME. If memory serves, it comes with IE6 installed.

I don't always get and error message....when I do it is explorer.exe.

It came installed with IE 5...I upgraded around Christmas time....everything was working fine until I defragmented.....

Does the error message say anything about invalid page fault?

I hate to ask this, but can you make it give the error message?

closest thing I've found so far is that your History directory is possibly corrupted.

if explorer.exe is ipf'ing, it could be a number of things...

corrupt files somewhere
a virus

reinstalling windows should fix it all (except possibly the virus, get a scanner for that).

I just did a virus scan...and it came up with nothing...

I can't make IE do anything anymore.....so I can't tell you too much about the error message I was getting....I beliee that it was an invalid page...but I am not 100% sure...

If I reinstalled windows....would I have to uninstall everything first?

Okay, lessee...

1) What virus scanner do you have? And when was the last time you updated your virus definitions?

2) If you reinstalled Windows, you would not have to uninstall everything first, but that's kind of a last resort. Is your PC a name brand? If so, post the brand and model.

I think there's a solution other than reinstalling Windows out there, if we can get enough clues together. :)

Ok...

1.....Norton Utilities 2002...and I updated my virus definitions on Monday night.

2...Dell Dimension L800r

IE 6.0 works great with XP... I don't know what planet grass you're smoking. :)

I prefer newer...

nope....it didn't find that.....

well, shit, so much for the easy solution.

You said you reinstalled IE6...have you tried uninstalling it to take it back to IE5? And if so, did that crash too?

I think it's the Norton AV myself. I had no troubles at all with anything till I used their defrag utility with their disk optimizer.

What I think is going on is that IE 6.0 trys to translate back through a thunk layer to FAT32 and then
norton steps in and says put that shit here!
and then MS says BITACH I put it where I want! Fuck off now or get hurt!?
Then Norton says...Hang on dis mofo!!

I tried all kinds of shit but the only thing that worked somewhat well was going back to I.E 5.5.

And don't just do the revert thing. Uninstall 6.0 and then reisntall 5.5 and then redo your disk defrag with the win me built in tool.

I tried all three....(I think like 2 times each now).....no luck with any.....

:(

I have a sledgehammer in the garage and a Bottle of Captain in the cupboard though...:)

Sounding like a good solution to me...:)

I've hunted high and low for an answer to this one, and I'm not finding anything specific.

Other things to try:

Disabling any items (one at a time) that load at startup, down by the clock, and see if that makes a difference. There are known issues with other virus scanners and IE, but I didn't see anything specific to Norton.

Go back to IE 5.5, and get Service Pack 2 for IE 5.5 from windowsupdate.com. I found 5.5 to be much more stable.

You can call Dell for help, but they'll likely want you to run a system restore, and that'll wipe out all your data.

Thanks for all of your help Project....I truely appreciate it!

I had a thought....right after I defragmented my computer I installed Auto Cad 2000i....do you think that that might be interfering with IE?

~toga

you can go to microsoft and do a windows update, or look in your start bar and see if it has something where you can click on "windows update" that should probably add some patches and crap to fix whatever bugs that are in ME. ME was a big flop for microsoft, they don't even advertise for it anymore. Anyay, if the windows update doesnt change anything, all you can do is uninstall the Internet Explorer and install an earlier version. That's all you can do.

That's a possibility...AutoCAD's always been kind of a pain in the ass for me. Let me see what I can dig up.

It could possibly be a firewall problem, if you have one installed. I had a similar problem and thought it was an IE thing. Turned out my firewall was working a little too well.

how much free disk space do you have? and are you running auto cad at the same time?

Well Of course I am..........

You didn't think I could be on the computer without being logged onto Elite, did ya?!?

I might miss one of your posts...:)

I still have quite a bit of free space left though....

Okay, I checked Autodesk and Microsoft, and can't find anything specific.

I would suggest removing AutoCAD 2000i, and see if it works. If not, reinstall IE without AutoCAD present, and see if that works.

Sounds like a giant pain, but it'd be better than reinstalling Windows if it works.

how much space is left? ALSO try running internet explorer with NOTHING else running and see what happens.

Well, I uninstalled AUTO cad....and IE is working. It still takes and awfully long time to connect (@ 10 minutes)...but when it does it works perfect.

Thank You SOoo much for all of your help !!!!
I really appreciated it!! :bigkiss:

I owe you one!!

Sweet! Glad it's at least partially working. The 10 minute thing kinda bugs me, but I'm not sure it's worth messing with what's working right.

Glad I could help! :D
