Are we the 'drug' generation?

Why have drugs become so popular among our generation. By our generation i'm talking about the 20 somethings or even early 30 somethings.

I'm not talking just recreational drugs, but steroids too. I am a recreational user of MDMA primarily, but have never done steroids, believe it or not i'm petrified of the side effects. There are steroid users who likewise do not touch recreational drugs for similar reasons and those who do both. But why?

Why weren't our parents generation tempted. Is life tougher these days. Is there more pressure on young people to succeed. Has the supply of drugs increased and become more readily available?

I'll throw up two reasons as to why i think drug has become synonomous with our generation.

1. Erosion of the family unit
2. Expecting much more out of life than our parents did when they were younger and taking life for granted. To explain, our parents were happy to have a job, have food on the table, gather round and listen to the wireless for entertainment, spend spare time together as a family etc. We seem to expect those things as a right and we are not content with the simple things to make us happy. We need the extra high, we always expect more rather than be grateful for what we have.

What are some other reasons?

3. belief that a pill can fix anything and everything, rather than anylysing the underlying cause

4. drug company pushing of pills onto us

5. better technology

6. laziness?!?

LOL - You use exstacy and you're afraid of the side effects from steroids?

I take it the knowledge of the drug culture of the 60's & 70's are foreign. or the 80's. Drugs have always been around. Even during prohibition, when alcohol was a drug, about 1/3 of the population still took it.

I'm all for responsible drug use.

Sure it's always been around, but nowhere near as prevalent as it is today. I think that when our parents were doing it, it was more as a way of rebelling against the system than anything else.

Do you think that 'rebellion' is still a valid reason today?

Well, i don't think drug use is as prevalent as you may think. Most of my friends aren't recreational drug users. The ones that are, just stick to one or two drugs (i.e., pot.)

I don't know what the cause is. I assume that the rise in standards has created it. I mean, now everyone wants to get a job that pays $30 an hour and that they love. everyone has to have a BMW & 4 bedroom house. So drugs may help bridge the gap.

I doubt its mainly rebellion. I think its more experimentation & traveling (except traveling in the mind except in the world). But, yes there is some anti-reagan/just say no propaganda backlash to it.

People have always been using drugs, but i think during the cold war other topics were ruling the newspaper so people didn´t notice it so much.
Steroid use cannot have been to popular some time ago, i think the first one came up during the ´60s and if it takes some time to get to the hobby BB, well ,the last generation probably didn´t have any means to access them.

I believe these are two of the foremost reasons.
