Are we overreacting? (9/11/01)

I find it kind of ridiculous how bad we (America) are overreacting to the whole 9/11 thing. It's already taken it's toll on the film and music industry. Cancelled albums, movies, scenes, cover art to cd's, etc... If I were an artist I wouldn't change a damn thing in my soon to be released projects. The only thing I can see changing is anything that involves the WTC. Only because of the fact that it doesn't exist anymore. My Grandma is freaking out over the whole ordeal. It doesn't scare me at all.

I'd like to see some action taken against these fucks. I'm beginning to think this so called war on terroism is sounding a lot like the "war on drugs". Are we going to go to war against a nation, or are we just going to setup a bunch of "anti-terrorist" regulations that ultimately take away more of our rights as citizens of the United States of America?

What's with this whole calling the ordeal September 11th? The victims of 9/11, the actions on 9/11, etc... You'd think they/we would've come up with a better name for the events that ocurred.

Check out the comedy 1941 with John Belushi, it is about the general hysteria that floated through California after Pearl Harbor.

And if we do not lash out as a society we will surley implode, mainly because people are looking for control right now and will try to control anything they can. It is just human nature to do so in times of danger. That does not make it right and this is the big threat to our civil rights at this time.

they got exactly what they wanted. they wanted to make us scared, and they did. i think mayor guliani had a point when he said 'we should move on'. changing everything is a sign that they won.

besides, supposedly this will cost $105,000,000,000 in destruction of property & lost wages.

america's GNP is 6.7-8 trillion dollars. so this cost about 1/75 of a years GNP.

i know that doesn't seem like much, but still, 1/75 of a years production value for the entire country gone in a few hours.

re: are we overreacting?

I think that's a great question and I really don't know.

In a way I long for things to be 'normal' but in other ways I think it's been an appropriate wake-up call.

I'm really not sure what the right balance is, between taking action and continuing as normal -- or whether we'll find that right balance.

I guess everyone's doing the best they can, to deal with it. I appreciate the sensitivity of people who've pulled certain movies and so on; but I also am thankful for those who've realized we will 'heal' best if we can continue to have fun and return to a somewhat normal schedule (as far as that's possible and whatever that means).

I kind of wish we could ask the people who were killed...would you want us to continue as normally as possible?

I think they'd want us to still be able to enjoy life and laugh at things and not get too too serious. I don't know; that's just my guess.

But they'd also want us to be kind to their families obviously...and not hurt them through insensitivity to their inestimable losses...well, and now add to that all the laid-off people :(

Not so much sensitivity as commercial flair... Scared of the public reaction maybe...

Yes, you could well be right. I expect they like my reasons better than yours ;) but who knows what the real ones are...

We've known of the possibility for wide-scale terrorist attacks for years. Many movies have portrayed this. Take The Siege for example. I recall them stressing that the terrorists will have already won if they affect our way of life, in that movie. I've must've of heard the "our way of life" line two dozen times since it all happened. Not to mention "cells, capable of independant actions", and so on.

I'm not trying to downplay what happened that day. It was a tragic event. I just can't help but feel sickened by this sudden influx of patriotism expressed by the same people who normally never gave a rat's ass about our country or flew our colors proud. Or the sudden outpour for families of the police, fire, and rescue workers of New York. When all anyone had to say about them before was usually in a negative light. The rappers contributing to the the "america songs" when before all they could say in there lyrics were " fuck the police" and the likes.

Do we really come together in tragic times, or are we just being sheep as usual and bonding under a popular cause at the time? Is it the "in" thing to do right now?

My life hasn't changed at all since it happened, not for a second. I'm hundreds of miles away from NY. Do I feel sorry for the victims? I really don't. I don't have feelings for anyone outside of my immediate family and close circle of friends. Not that I don't want to feel sympathy/sorrow, it's just that I emotionally can't. That's not to say that I wouldn't change all that happened if I could or that I side with those scumbags behind it. I'd like to see some vengeance like most everyone else living in our great country.

What sickens me more is the bleeding heart liberals who want to talk peace right now.

I won't give up any of my civil liberties to even my government, so the people responsible for this desparate act, you are not going to take any of my civil rights away either.

This is one fucked up country, people thinking they should give up rights for a temporary peace and safety, they will get neither.

Enough said.

I fear we are ready to give up our civil liberties to feel safe.
The world's getting ripe for the proverbial "Mark of the Beast",
the personal identity chip implanted in your hand or scalp that allows
any doorway sensor to determine who you are.
They've already perfected it for implant in pets and animals, and we're next.
Then the government's got everyone where they can be tracked and controlled by computer.
Imagine the abuse a meglomaniac could have with that.

On the other hand I also sense a change in the public morality/ethics of the country.
Any major near death experience, loss of a parent, loved one..etc, causes a person to take stock.
Lot's of people change their lives, jobs, drop bad habits, start exercising...right after such a shock.
Wakes people up and shows them they don't have forever, so carpee diem.
I think that's reflecting in the music, tv,and movie industry.
They're realizing they've been producing tasteless crap and are reorienting,
hopefully to something more tastefull and substantive.
