I dug this GnR classic out from a pile of old CD's today. Got "paradise city" cranked up nice and loud...my air guitar skills are still razor sharp.

Hot damn, I want to grow a mullet and rock out.

Why dont they make music like this anymore?

I'm sure Jesse is a wonderful human being, but what does that have to do with my rock n' roll aspirations?

:garza: fuck yea all day long baby!!!! i have bought that cd/cassetee about 8 times due to lost or stolen or forgeting it at a buds house.. btw i just bought the album again 2 weeks ago

I loved GnR back in the day, I still listen to them occasionaly when my girl is out of the house.

When I saw Duff and Slash in Velvet Revolver it brought back some old memories.

GNR was a bubble gum, distilled waste of space.

On the other hand, Zep does have that Viking Kitten song.

I didn't get to see Velvet Revolver live, I only saw that video on Mtv.

When I lived in Dallas I was able to see quite a few 80's hard rock groups, hell some of my friends opened up for a few. It was usually kind of depressing once the night ended and I realized that a lot of these bands seemed like they where playing for pocket change now. Bands that would never have talked to ya back in the day where now all sociable and layed back.

I know I tripped out when I went and saw foghat in a little dumpy club when they use to sell out coliseums. Same with JP but rob wasn't with them so I don't know how they will do now that he is back. They a had lot of records and fans. Such is rocknroll just like tittie dancing better save some of those bucks before things start sagging.

I couldn't agree more. Axl Rose's voice is like fingernails on a blackboard to me, and Slash may be the most overrated guitarist of the last two decades. He cannot bend a note up to pitch, and he can't play a solo that's in the same scale as the song.

As for Stephen Pearcy, well, if he was on fire and I was standing next to him with a bucket of water, I'd walk the other way.

Don't feel sorry for the 80s bands. 20 years later -- and they STILL have a fanbase and can tour across the country.

Today's bands -- in 20 years -- will be working at Jiffy Lube and their bands will have been replaced by newer bands that look and sound exactly like them. I wonder where President of the United States of America and Smashing Pumpkins are now?

You don't even *wanna* see the contracts new bands sign to labels these days. To say they're up there bouncing around to minimum wage is *not* too much of an understatement. But they're young, banging hot chicks, and flying in private jets -- so they don't care. Bottomline.

My friend had a drumset used by GnR. It was a really nice set, perfect for the metal we used play. He was borrowing it though and had to give it back.
GnR is alright. Its all about the 80's thrash though

That's true bro!

We used to play with Element Eighty and they got signed by Universal a year ago and it wouldn't supprise me if those guys still have to try and hold a job.

Record labels now adays even half ass the recordings(because I scarcely see a difference from E-80's original recording). There is no push for video's for hard rock bands like in the past, which may be one of the biggest reasons why those bands don't last. As the saying goes "out of sight, out of mind," when you hear an 80's song more than likely that video plays in your mind and the band has a bigger and longer lasting impression.

They played at the club where I work as a sound tech, just last week. They were nice guys, seemed like a good band, but they were travelling with no crew, in an ancient tour bus. I think one of the band members was actually driving the bus. Oh, and they were the opening act for a local, unsigned act.

One thing they had that really cracked me up, was the bass player had a dummy speaker cabinet that was actually a rolling work case where they kept all their cords and tools and stuff.

getting "signed" is nothing more than a trumped up loan with major interest (trust me, they add it in!).

then you *pay* for the *privilege* of using that label's monopolized distribution system.

then you *pay* for the usage of the record company's staff, resources, marketing, etc.

You only get leverage in this industry after you've been around for 5+ years, and can wave the "we're BIG names now and can sign somewhere else" type warcry. You need to get to a u2, korn, metallica, madonna leave. Even then -- there's a big chance they might just dump you and replace you with a similar band that'll sell even more records, and is 10% cheaper.

the music industry is not the industry to make riches as a musician. in a nutshell.

Then again -- whatcha expect from companies that sue their users.

axel was focused for sucsess, unfortunatly the other memebers wanted to party 24/7...i dont blame him for dissing them...

That "party" and "decadent" atmosphere and lifetsyle of the band is what entices throngs of people to want to come to their shows and hang out with them. Those throngs of people to the shows then make big money for club owners. People making money catches the ear of record executives. Record executives don't want to be "left out" and sign bands that make money. Formula complete.

That formula also worked for Motley Crue, Doors and Aerosmith.

There's no "wild and fun" bands in LA anymore to attract clubgoers. Which is why most original bands (of all genres) draw a whopping total of 30 people, while tribute bands like mine, draw 200-500.

Heard he came from Memphis
Somewhere down south
Started hangin' with the blues crowd
That's how he got that crazy sound

Yep...it does. But at least I'm pretty and not nearly as stupid as the majority of my generation.

Damn the scene must stink in LA! I agree with "some" tribute bands making more than originals to a point.

Depending on where my band "MILE ZERO" played we never drew less than 100 peeps for a show where we didn't promote, and around 750-900 peeps on a promoted show.

Hell, we shut out Element Eighty at the Ridglea Theater in Ft. worth just before they got signed. We also where a favorite over AC/DC tribute band "Back in Black" in a few bars.

I understand it's not all about how good you are but what you bring to the stage, how you promote, and if you get the crowd into it and make them feel a part of the show/band your fans become like family.
