Its been 20 years since I lived in an apartment. About to move in.

Seriously, what questions should I be asking on the walk through?
2 bedroom
985 sq feet
garage
utility/laundry room
individual ac/heating unit

What do they get you on? Move out cost? Rent goes up after lease is up?
Need some voices of experience here.

Mucho appreciado.......

So yeah, I'm looking at apts in NYC and found a cozy Alcove, 530 sqft for $550K. Can you beat that? :(

A friend of mine is a realtor in NYC and just sold 300 square feet for $389K.

I have a 300 sf closet.

Bizarre. Glad I got my place in NYC forever ago.

With an apt its all about the neighbors. Check the place out a few times at different times of day. See what they pay, generally around here you only have to pay electric. They may try to throw in water and garbage but I've never seen it.

I agree. Check the place out throughout the day. Neighbors and safety, being a single female, were the two most important issues for me. If you can find a place that inlcludes utilities - good luck. My complex is one of the few in the area that includes everything in the rent.

Good stuff.
I did check it at various times. Even on a Saturday night. Pretty quiet.
Lots of single professionals from the corporate headquarters nearby. A few families. Brunch every Sat. morning. Almost everyone parks in their garages.

I pay electric and rent.

Any other red flags to look for?

Thanks to all.

Terms and conditions to get out of a lease. Do they offer 6 month leases? If so, is the rent higher. I don't know your situation, but for me, I can't be tied to a 12 month lease right now, I'm thinking about buying a condo.

How often does the rent go up? Are they offering any specials? Because I stayed at my place, my rent has been the same for 4 years, even though the rent has gone up.

I got a 6 month lease. The rent was $40 more, but I can't commit to a 12 month either. Not until I figure out being single again.
Getting out of a lease there is pretty much the same as anywhere, you're going to get popped.
I checked average electric bill.
I checked police/crime reports. (nothing more than loud music complaint)
They were built in 98'.
Talked to a couple of people who have been there 4 years and love it.
The apt. does overlook a creek and trees. Good shade in a Texas summer does help!

Thanks again....really.

Blood and semen on the walls is a red flag..

Ask about crime rates in area.. i believe by law they have to give you the ## of break ins reported per year etc... always good to know if you are living in the ghetto... also see if pizza gets delivered out there.. my last apartment there wasn't a fucking pizza place that delivered to me.. i was PISSED!!!!!!!
