Anyone know how to restore lost files?

My kid's Worlds of Warcraft I think led to my family desktop crashing a few days ago. Before I had a chance to work on it, my 13 yr old son ran a windows recovery disk (tried to fix the problem he created) but wasn't able to save anything. I am passed being pissed, now trying to see if I can go back and retrieve anything.

Anyone have any advice?

Just move forward, suck it up, and outline a procedure your son is to follow should it happen again. Also buy an external HD for your system to store stuff on that way you can have all your materials secure if your system bombs.

If you want to shell out some big bucks though google file recovery services and there are several outfits that will take the drive and try and find what you are looking for. No guarantees though.

Yeah, I have already done the moving forward bit. Ext HD is a good idea too. But it sounds like you're saying recovery is hopeless?

Nothing too important lost. Some pics, some kids homework. My Ipod library :(

Que sera...

Yeah, pretty much. The recovery process usually over writes everything.

I have a copy of a recovery program you can use to get out the last 7 things put on evrey sector of your HD, but you'll need an external drive to write the data to as it's recovered.

I did the recovery disk option thingy before and some of the files were still there after it finished.

Go under Start >> Explore >> and look around. Look at all the old files on the Users and Desktop menu.

You never know, I was surprised as hell to find all my shit still there.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Thanks, but no ext HD.

I would buy another disk and install Windows on that then connect your old disk as a secondary drive and see if anything is there.

If anything was truly valuable or irreplaceable, you can send the HDD to a Data Recovery specialist, but the fee will be steep. Like almost four figures steep.
