need to buy some subs, an amp etc

so whats the best brand these days anyone know?

not trying to spend that much just wanna have some decent bass

i just go and let the owner of the shop tell me what to put in. use a smaller shop where the owner works everyday himself. i tell him what i'm expecting and he does the job for a reasonable price... he talked me out of 2 and into just a single 10" for the cargo area of my 03 mr2. for what i wanted he said that's all i needed. find somewhere with people you can trust (not a big chain that pays on commission).

i have 6 jl'12w6s in my old highschool mobile... not impressed... running a class d mmatts amp pushing 1200 rms to all 6 (meager) and I went through a good 4 subs in 2 yrs with the amp at 50%... x-over VERY low too... the new ones look a lot better than mine do, but I still like a lot of other companies out there. I'm all about quality in the new ride... fuck base... 1 10inch sub with GOOD amplification x'd over very low and some 8's handling midbass will make any car sound like a dream.

I think since I basically dont know shit I'm just gonna go to the store and pray for god that the guy in there will hook me up with some good stuff.

dont do that

I have installed a few systems for friends, and I always tell them to go w/ MA Audio stuff. Its a fairly new brand and I believe it has the best bang for the buck. Last system I did was

2 5.25" (front speakers)
2 6x9" (rear speakers)
1 800watt 4 channel amp
1 800watt 1 channel amp
2 12" subs (sealed box)

w/ installation, only $800

Its really very basic:

Head unit - Alpine or Eclipse
Amps - Phoenix Gold
Speakers - MB Quart
Subwoofers - Boston Acoustics
Wiring, fuses and other hardware - Monstercable or Phoenix Gold.

Thats all you'll ever need to know right there.

i have some mb quarts in my other car, they're definitely hotness... but for what they cost, tehy're not makin much better noise than the Planet audio seps I have.... I'd recommend investing more on your amps than the speakers...

Oh sure, I was just going with the shotgun approach, best of everything wham bam, theres other top notch brands that can be substituted in, including planet audio, xtant...

My seperates in the doors are Diamond M3 6 1/2 inch. Powered by a Clarion amp.

Very clean!

My deck is a Alpine 7895 i think. Totally nice.

My sub is a single Rockford 12 punch and a cheap amp. Sounds suprisingly good. Not enough power to bump the neighborhood, but i don't need it.

Thinking of switching to two JL 10w3s with a good Pheonix Gold amp.

well fuck I just went to the store today and was pretty dissapointed

most of the shit in there I can get on ebay for 1/3 of the price if not less..

so anyway prolly gonna buy everything online and have someone install it...

"Subwoofers - Boston Acoustics" thats what the guy was offering me, or at least thats what I think it was

It depends on the max and RMS wattage of the subs. For example, if they are 2 500watt max subs, the RMS might be 200 on em. You could run a 2 channel 600 watt amp (300x2 peak) or a 800 watt amp (400x2 peak).

Use the best wiring you can, and get a head unit with the features and look you want. If you just need a bit of bass, you may want to use just 1 sub. Brand of sub may matter at a serious or competition level, but if you just want some bass, it really doesnt matter, but try not to go with a generic from a small company. Kicker Solobarics (the square subs) are nice.

Dont be cheap when it comes to buying your speakers, and make sure you get at least 1 pair of tweeters.

Almost everything is cheapest on eBay, but you might want to order your wiring from Crutchfield and get one of their installation diagrams for your specific car, it comes in handy.
