anyone involved in nursing

I keep hearing baaaad things about this profession, so i don't know if i should still go into it. I am thinking about changing my profession to dental hygiene (comparable pay & both have flexible schedules) as the workload & stress would probably be lower. However, the pay would be lower too (you 'can' make $32 an hour as a nurse, dental hygiene hardly goes over $20).

For the record, i feel no calling to help people. I am a cold motherfucker, i just want a good job (so all that 'helping people' stuff doesn't apply).

I wish there was some way i could test the profession out before i went into it to see if i could stand it.

What about being an anesthesist*? You only have to go for 2 extra years of school, I think, and the pay is great.

I'd say don't go into nursing if you don't like to help people. They will get on your nerves so damn bad that you will hate them. You must have a high tolerance for putting up with people's bullshit to be a nurse. No offence, but I wouldn't want you for a nurse if I knew your attitude about it.

I would never be a nurse, even though the pay is acceptable. This field is so poorly trained and overworked, not to mention filled with incompetents (but I also feel this way about MD's).

?!?!?!?!? "Mr. UN, save the starving people, help the poor" is not about helping people?? Very enlightening.

You can. This is America. It may not be the easiest thing to do, but it is more attainable here than in other countries.

Stay away from the health care field if you don't want to deal with people, you will be miserable.

Plus it will show to the people who you deal with and they already have enough problems, they don't need someone who does not want to help.

go into nursing. just think off all the nude bodies you can explore before they wake up from surgery. (it would be like an all you can eat buffet)

Come to think of it......

My gf works as a student nurse, She's moving to the Pediatrics dept. for the past 3 years she's worked labor and deliv. and some in the ER

her hospital has 12hr shifts for ld, and ER

she makes $24.50 an hr and can count on 40-60hrs of overtime. Needless to say she's working tons now and bringing home lot's of $$$ to pay for all the fun things we want. not to mention putting away for the big move

She enjoys her work but I can def tell when she's really tired, and there are times we dont talk for a few days, and maybe for a few minutes

lot's of pro's and con's but if you want to help people it pays ok
not to mention there are plenty of nursing jobs, and with some experience and some extended education you can move to different types of depts

You have to have a PhD MD to be an anestheiolgist. Which is roughly 8 years.

You're thinking of a Physician's Assistant.

Code, I think he was thinking of a nurse anethesist. You only have to go to school for 2 years after you have your BSN.

Nordstrom...we have talked about this before. I will tell you right now. If you don't like helping people...this is NOT the profession for you. If...and only if...you think you could get through nursing school...you could become a drug rep, or continue on into another area. You don't have to do patient care. But...you have to have a BSN to do these things. Which means that you will have to wipe butts for 3 years before not having to do it anymore.

There is one thing for sure, though....if you were to go into nursing...you could move anywhere and get a wonderful job.

As a nurse, I will have to say that this is the last thing on everyone's mind. We worry more about Hepatitis than we do about AIDS. That is an extremely small percentage...and is very rare...but yet it still happens. We don't treat anyone with AIDS any differently than anyone else. Universal precautions is used on everyone.

Drug reps have to deal with people in a far more amiable way than a nurse. :(

Don't go into the health field if you're not interested in helping or working with people.

I am a Respiratory therapist and a RN. I am getting ready to start Anesthestist school next year. If you cant tolerate people or dont enjoy helping people then it is definately not for you. I work in a large truama center and I will tell you that hospitals will make you start to really dislike people in general. When you realize the scum that is out there....................people who just come in to the hospital for narcotics or whatever else gets them high. If you find something that you think you want to do, usually you can call the department and they will let you shadow for a few days, this way you can somewhat get a taste of what your in for.

i can tolerate people, but i don't view this profession as a 'calling' or something. Its my understanding that it is those people who end up burnt out & cynical (those who want to save the world, only to be humiliated & rejected), not those who view it as a job to do.

I'm not adverse to helping people, but i'm not really interested in it either. One of my main reasons for wanting to go in was to eventually get a CRNA sometime. I like the idea of continuing education (associates to bach, bach to masters, masters to Ph.D.). I also like the flexibility (work anywhere in the world, any shift, part time or full time). Flexibility, pay & capacity for continuing education all appeal to me. But i have heard so many horror stories of people reaaaally hating their job that i am afriad that will happen to me. That 'cold motherfucker' remark was kindof a joke.

Either way, i have like 60 more years to live.

Thanks for your responses. I'm setting up a job shadow thing on tuesday.

bump fo all my niggas on lockdown.

I like the idea of flexible scheduling (full or part time. any shift. work in any town, multiple employment areas (geriatics, pediatrics, home health care, etc)), good pay and the ability to get an advanced degree down the road. I'm just afraid i will be miserable. I read that around 54% of nurses wouldn't recommend the profession to their kids. But for all i know that may be true of all professions. Anyway, i have an anxiety disorder which makes me worry excessively. I know this is fucking up my judgement, and i need some objective evidence that i will be ok.

hard decisions.

The dental profession has the highest rate of suicide.

No way could I sit around putting my hands in cavity infected mouths. Bad breath.....
