my roommate is a rock climber and she's going to teach me. hopefully i don't splatter my brains all over the rocks when i go....

any climbers here?

yeah, its fun, but I dont have any equipment, this weekend Im going to a cave on the vertical face of a limestone cliff, we have to use a freaking rope ladder, the cliff is like 70feet tall. Pray for me, fuck I wish I had equipment

Been climbing since about 7th grade. you can get a decent harness and shoes for about $200. Basic gear for top-roping with rope and slings etc. will run you about 350- 500 depending on what you want. It is an addictive sport, I haven't climbed in about a year but when I was really serious about it I was leading up to 5.12. Solo climbing is the sport if you have the skill and balls. Screw the gear. LOL. Most i have soloed is a 5.9 only about 90ft, but there is no rush like it knowing that your first mistake is your last. Have fun with it and work up at your pace. Just make sure your friend knows what she is doing. If she is a lot smaller than you make sure she anchors her belay. Let us know how it goes.

yeah, i think she knows what she is doing because her dad is quasi-pro...or was.

let us hope i don't die.

i tried indoor once or twice....i pretty much sucked

My daughter could climb to the top of the difficult couse like a monkey, when she was 10. I thought it'd be so easy. That I'd just fly right to the top. I took off real fast and then got stuck right in the middle. I was done. Defeated by a 10 yr. old girl.

Where is she taking you? What type of harness do you have? Shoes? A First timer is often best served at an indoor club to get their feet wet. If her Dad is that good, have him come along. either way it sounds like you are in good hands. I am sure you will love it. BTW, cut your nails SHORT before going. Toenails too. You will thank me.

see, the worst is you need a really strong grip, but not the kind of grip you think. your fingers need to be strong as shit. they have these boards for doing pullups on, but instead of wrapping your hand around a bar, you have your fingers inside a groove that is about .5 inch. it's much harder than it sounds.

my roommate's father was telling me how he would diet down from 180 to 130 during climbing season when he was really into it. even at that weight, he said he could do single arm pull downs with 240lbs. he took climbing VERY seriously.

Yes your forearm strenghth is very important but a lot of climbing, until you get into the elite, is foot placement. Why let a small muscle group like your forearms take the brunt of it when your legs can support your weight. Remember that when you go out there. It isn't about strength it is about finesse. Finding a route is a puzzle to solve. That is the beauty of it. Rock climbing is as mental as it is physical. They will take you out on easy rock for the first time, remember foot placement is key. Support your weight with your legs and you will enjoy it much more.

your skin needs to be toughened up as well i imagine, otherwise it will tear easily..........that will come with time i guess.

VG, you would probably love crack climbing, the best part is sticking your hand in the crack and making a fist to pull yourself up.
