what styles/sub genres are there in jazz? I particularly like the sleazy, old skool jazz thing. I don't dig too much contemporary/new age type jazz. I like it smoove, sleazy, sultry... can you recommend some artists of jazz? I like vocals, the showering snare drum with the drizzling hi hat sound. when I think of jazz, I think of some lady lying down on the piano singing with a big glass of bourbon on the side...

hey thanks for the suggestions, smalls. I do know of billie holiday, but me being from the pepsi generation, I gotta have a hi fi recording. any mentions of a group/s that have a stand up bass and play moderately slow?

if I remember correctyly, chick corea to me is comtemporary, and I don't dig that sound too much, but it was a long time since i have heard any kind of jazz, so it might appeal to me...
