Anyone here into Import Cars???

I have made up my mind to buy a 99 Civic SI

My reasons
Insurance, Decent Gas Mileage, decent price, And just something about a 4 banger that can get up and go puts a smile on myself when some just think a stock mustang or cammaro is the way to go

So what does everyone else have? What mods have you made to it or what do you plan on doing to it?

Well I dont have big $$ to affoard the insurance on a V8

just a cheap mans dream....I also feel a bit more at ease with trusting the ability for a ricer to hold together. I mean hell my faimly has driven a Civic and an Acura well into 300k miles

I raise the flag on that. You'll probably dump about 10k in mods to make the thing look and sound fast. And when all is said and done, you'll still have a rice rocket that does the 1/4 in 16.00 flat. I'm not busting on you, I just hear this talk all the time when hanging out with my girls friends.

You'll dump some body kit on it, Fart pipe, (You gotta do the K&N) Rims, Tires, Maybe if your brave enough throw a CAM in it, or a small shot of juice.

Or you could buy a stock used 93-97 LT1 power car and run low 14's high 13's all day long stock. And the money you save on making the Civic sound fast you can apply towards insurance.

I'm 25, I was 23 when I bought my car. IT can be done.

I've been calling around for insurance quotes and nothing seems to reasonable.

One thing is for certain I dont want any car to sound like a Lawnmower. I'm more interested in getting work under the hood done first

please don't rice it out. that shit looks so gay.

i will issue you one of these so fast it'll make your head spin and that civic will start leaking soy sauce.

My Insurance for a 92 Ford F150 XLT is over 5k

I'm going to check out USAA to see what my insurance would be like in GA since thats where most likely I'll stay

?!?! Jesus! Did you get 5 DWI's last year?! Christ-o-mighty! I'm sure you did something lame to get that insurance rate.

I think the Insurance in Houston is probably just a bit jacked up

no dwi's at one time I had 3 speeding tickets, 1 was taken care of with Defensive driving...WHen I had my jeep I had 3 Nature Related Accident claims

5k...Ouch.

Get the car you like, just don't dump too much $$ into
the motor.

I've seen some people pour over 15k into them.

I dont plan on pouring too much money into it. I'm trying to get some info on a supercharger my buddy was talking about getting for his.

I dont have much trust for American vehicles holding up to well for the long haul

Yeah because once you start strapping on a S/C and getting into an engine imports are rock stable too

I'm not anti-imports. I own a 94 nissan for my winter beater and love it. But understand this, I know it's slow. I never-ever pretend that it's fast in anyway shape or form. I would never try to make it sound fast or rice it up with stickers. It's got $80,000 miles on it and I've just had to buy a new battery for it and besides that and tires it never gave me a problem.

The problem with ricers is that they take these cars with 100,00+ miles on it and rice it up thinking it's cool.

Get the stereo in there, maybe some rims to make it look better. But if your buying it for the reliabilty don't make a mockery out of yourself and then tell us that you plan on getting into the egine or a S/C.

yeah... In almost the same sentence about long term reliabilty. We know your intentions now, don't insult our "gathered" intelligence and tell us your going to leave a Si stock while talking about making it faster in the same thread.

I understand kids and insurance, I know not everyone has the luck to afford a sportscar at 20. However, you have to realize that once your 25 or older you're going to look pretty lame driving a riced up car.(unless your into denal, and think that the 30 year olds at your rice gathering are cool living with mom). Then you're going to have to completely change your thoughts and go with a true sportscar or an old muscle car.

I'm just trying to save you the heartache and the hassle of that change. If you start learning V-8's at your age, you'll be an expert at 30 instead of having to learn them for the first time.

Freak does your Lexus run well? A friend of mine wants to sell his cause he has made a shit load of repairs over the past 2 years

TxCollegeguy, how 'bout a Mazda Miata? I've got a red 1992 and it is hella fun to drive, not a muscle car by any means but soo much fun to rip around in! They drive like go-karts. Course they are small, don't know how big you are but hubby is 6'0" 220 lbs and can fit in it. I've got 102,000 miles on it with no major problems. Only problems I've had is a very slow leak on the radiator hose which happened after the mechanics put a new one on, they didn't get it fitted properly or something. Since I've had the car, I've put a spoiler on it, recently replaced the suspension system and lowered it an inch, put bigger sway bars on it, went from 14" wheels to 17" wheels and wider tires, now I floor the son of a gun around corners with no loss of traction, feels like I'm driving a friggin' race car. Plus, it is possible to drop a V-8 in a Miata (with numerous modifications of course), they call them Monster Miatas. Anyway, bottom line is that they are very reliable cars, fun to drive as is (stock), and not too rough money-wise, insurance on them isn't high, I have USAA. Even if you don't buy one, I highly recommend test driving one just for the experience of it, they are fun to drive, peppy little cars. Just make sure you find some good corners to get the real experience. And the next car I buy will be another 2-seater foreign car to replace my baby cause I'm spoiled on the handling now. I've driven a Camaro and even though it had way more power than my Miata, it lacked the "fun factor" that my Miata has. Not to say that I don't like muscle cars (heck, I drool over them, that raw power and the look they have) cause I certainly do, but for everyday, affordable, practicality, I love my MIATA!:D

Miata is a 2 seater sportscar, his insurance would be insane for that. Any car without a rear seat and only 2 seats in the front is by definition a sportscar.

I agree with the fun factor of a miata, I was looking at one before my roomate got a GTP and I knew I had to get something faster then him. (it's a guy thing).

Miata's will hand most cars thier ass on the road, they handle amazing and are light as hell. But remember the trick to this is "rear wheel drive" otherwise you'll just get push from Front wheel drive. (Unless you dump mad coin into the front)

They do lack any and all power, but there are superchargers for it and Nitrous. The reason I'm not ragging on the miata is that it is a sportscar, it was built to handle the road in stock form. A Civic is a economy car no matter how many ways you slice it.

It's funny that I'm talking about this on here cause my dad just called me and told me he found a 97 Shinoda Boss Mustang GT???for just under 13k with 58k miles

Well hells bells if some Insurance person would tell me a price I could affoard insurance I would probably go for something like this or a cammaro

Nothing wrong with IMPORTS at all. Even at 30 years of age. Just please don't get a FWD car if your looking for a sporty car.

When I lived in Japan alot of guys would have late 60's Nissan Skylines and old Mazda Cosmo's. Even late 80's cars like a Toyota Levin/Tureno Mazda FB3/FC3 RX-7's were coveted and "hot rodded".

If bang for your buck is an issue and you want "trick" get an older car. Like an Mr2, GSX Eclipse, Talon AWD/TSi, 91' 300ZX, old Supra Turbo. Even an old 260Z is faster than a Civic Si, handles better too.

That's a little better, however here are some items to digest. 1997 Mustang stock HP rating was 215. The Package you discribe above adds a supercharger to that package along with a "nice" sticker package. With that the horsepower is around 280-310hp. Not too bad! Figure around a 14 second car with that.

What about your insurance?
If your really worried about insurance get a old FOX body 4 cyl stang, drop a 5.0 in it, stroke it out to a 327 add a blower, clutch, rearend. Wha-bam! instant 10 to 11 second timeslip!

My ex-husband and I owned the Miata when we were both under 25 yrs old, had State Farm insurance at the time, and I know we didn't pay more than $165 a month for insurance for it and the Camaro so I've always considered the Miata one of the lowest costing for insurance as compared to other sports cars. And right now we have USAA with the Miata and a 96 Jeep Cherokee on the policy and we pay $75 per month. So if someone is looking for an affordable sports car with affordable insurance, the Miata is a good choice, IMO (of course I'm biased, hehe).

Yeah, and my dad (a mechanic) keeps telling be to save my "pennies" and he'll turbocharge my Miata for me. That would be suhhhwwweeetttt! Nah, it's gettin' too old though now. I'm ready to go up another level and get a BMW Z3 or a Porshe, of course that is wishful thinking on my part, can't afford either of those! So until then I guess I will keep driving my Miata and try not to pound it too much, hehe. :D

Word! I agree if you go import get one of those on the list. The trick is to not have FWD in your car. If you've ever felt Torque steer you would know why.

Not true I had a non turbo 91' Toyota Mr2. It was considered a coupe and the turbo edition is considered a sports coupe.
As a matter of fact my wifes car a 95' Nissan Sentra SE was slightly higher to insure than my mid-engine RWD coupe.
