The last time I put a gun to a man's head... the guy was climbing over my back fence. It was a high 6" wood fence that connected to an alley behind my house. (I lived in a part of Venice called 'Ghost Town' for the 24 killings in a 4 block area during 2 months of 'the War.' It was considered the most dangerous place to live in the country at one time. Now it's nice.) (Hell, I even had a bullet hole through the wall above my desk. Lots of drive bys.) There were a lot of crack heads who would smoke pipes in the alley... then try to roll a house.
I saw him eyeballing my place for a while through a back window... knew he was working up the nerve... then walked around to the side of my house to cut him off when I saw him heading towards my bushes.
As he came over the top of the fence, I was standing right in front of him... my wife's 38 J frame cocked... the end of the barrel not a foot from his head. I said, "Come over the fence and I'll blow your f_cking head off."
He didn't move backwards. He didn't seem scared at all. He didn't even look like he wanted to back away. He said, "Why? What you got in there?"
After a long 10-20 seconds... he finally eased backwards back down the fence and slithered off.
To this day I wish I'd shot him. I didn't have the law on my side... or any way of making it look like it should be on my side... and I've always known he was one I shouldn't let get away.
He was not somebody that should ever be allowed to walk free.
