I actually made the acquaintance of a young woman who fled from I believe it was Zimbabwe. I am not sure. The little bit that she told of of the horrors she grew up watching... her family raped and murdered/mutilated... oh my god. I don't know how she could function day to day. And yet she did.

Blaming the colonials for the current state of Africa is like blaming the Americans for the current state of Iraq (well at least Saddam in power kept the warring civil factions under control). There was civil war, ethnic cleansing and poverty well before either party got involved in the relevant country / continent. What I do disagree with is doing it under the banner of "bringing democracy to these (backward) countries" and going against thousands of years of strong tribal loyalties, but obviously we can't just go in and say "Look, give us your natural resources and we'll build an infrastructure for you, there's a good chap".

Countries like Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) were better off under Ian Smith's "white British" rule. We may not be Rome and we took advantage of these countries but we still created hospitals, schools and transport for these countries and Zimbabwe had some of the highest literacy and healthcare rates on the continent during that period. Certainly done a better sodding job of it than the Italians / Dutch / French. Now you have Zimbabweans complaining of famine while conveniently forgetting the black paramilitaries that were killing and chasing off white expat farmers that generated crops for the country (yea ok, at profit, but there was still food for people to eat)!
