Ive always been curious to have one for a pet(de -scented of course)Now keep in mind ive owned coons, possums, nutrias and ferrets so im no stranger to rodents but they are quite popular in pet stores in spring time here.
Never owned them and would never own more than one after the stories I've heard from my friends who did. I also worked very, very closely with people who did skunk rescue in the years I was breeding/rescuing ferrets.
You can't compare them to ferrets, really, probably the closest thing would be a raccoon. No matter what any pet shop signs say, they're not domestic (unlike ferrets), just captive bred. I understand that diet is a huge issue for them. They don't do well on dog or cat food and should be fed food mixed to their needs or they'll get fat very easily, which will make them very sick very fast (like a dog, they'll eat everything they can find, to the point of heavily overeating). Also, you don't just want it descented, you really want it neutered, too, skunks in puberty are nasty little bastards.
They're very intelligent and can be litter trained or trained to go outside, but need to be handled properly when young or they can be too mouthy. And if you want to let it roam in the house you basically have to childproof everything, they can use their front paws virtually like hands.
There are a lot of message boards out there by and for skunk owners, you'd want to read a bunch of those and really make an informed decision before you start spending your money.
