It amazes (and pisses me off) that all of these basic, plain, wood desks are so fucking expensive. I found this perfect desk I wanted for my room and the goddamn thing was $300. I'm kicking around the idea of just buying some wood and building it myself. Anybody know how expensive that smooth wood they use to build those "some assembly required" desks is?

-Warik

Do you have woodworking tools? Check out an unfinished shop where wood furniture is offered without a finish and this will save bucks. Also check out used furniture outlets and see if you can wrangle a deal.

$300 is NOT expensive. Not by any means. The new desk I bought for my remodeled office was $2800 and that was USED!! And it is nothing fancy.

But chances are, you can find the basic wood and sand it yourself. Or if you can give me a pic of what kind of desk you have in mind I can come with a very original idea for you that would be cheaper as well.

You can't expect me to put Rooms To Go shit in my house. The desk I bought was hand crafted. You see it and you will not see it in another person's home. I don't do that generic shit.

Now I just assembled a dorm desk for someone I know that is rather unique with a glass top and it is NOT the general dorm shit you see commonly.

LOL sorry! Didn't know it was a big deal! I will just take your answer as a "no" :)

What happened to your picture of your room?

I prefer to keep my personal HETEROSEXUAL relationships off of the internet. You did not offend me.

The picture disappeared, as I believe the point was made. You'd be amazed what you can find if you shop for a deal.

When I get this stage of my kitchen complete, I will post a pic for you guys/gals/? to see. It's coming along nicely.

Neat how you turn Warik thread about his desk into a thread about your boring kitchen.

Been there, done that. Hope you aren't using Maple.

Hit some auctions in your area. Estate sales can be FANTASTIC for deals on allll kinds of things!

I bought a solid oak desk for my hubbies office and refinished it...It's beautiful!

Screw you fag boy.

You're one to talk about turning threads in to something else.

Maple? Hardly. Try stainless steel.

Warik still has not come back with a pic of this desk.

The cheapest and most decorative way to "build" a desk is just get two identical bases:

chinese3_vases_ft.jpg

And put a clear glass top over it. You can get square cut glass very cheap.

Or in the case of the dorm desk I made, I used Chinese Fish Bowls on platforms. I lined the mid rim with small lights so that it shines upwards and onto the desk, eliminating the need for a lamp.

You can cut a section out of the backside and use it to house the PC and cables, thus only having a monitor, keyboard and mouse on your desk top.

If you don't like bowls or vases, you can do the same with bigger piece of art work:

TNgold-foo-dogs-large-19873a.JPG

Just add a small black rolling file cabinet beneath it and you are good to go.

If you don't like chinese art work or glass tops (needs to be Windexed daily for fingerprints) Then you can do something like the Desk you find at Storehouse. Made out of laminated wooded Saw Horses (painted black) and a flat black top.

Or you can go to BrandsMart USA and buy one there decently priced.

You wish you were man enough to, sissy bitch.

Stainless steel is like.... so 1990's. Then again, I was not expecting much cutting edge tastes from you.

Good furniture is not cheap.

Furniture is

1. large and heavy (therefore expensive to ship),

2. cannot be manufactured in tremendous bulk (because tastes and design vary so much, therefore fewer efficiencies can be built into teh process)

3. Requires huge storage facilities like warehouses and showrooms, because a customer may have to see 900 pieces to buy one. (Therefore the rents are high for the showroom owners)

All these costs are passed on to you.

even $2800 is not outrageous.

I have this mental picture of you saying that statement with a nise litthle lissspp.

Like.... so 1990's ?? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. No doubt about it, you're a fag!

I'm not shooting for getting a cover shot of Florida Design.

Then again, I'm not a man-ass rider, like you.

With stainless steel, you won't even get on the cover of Mediocre Living.

Stainless steel went out in the 90's with loft living and track lighting.

Nice try, still behind the times. But I am sure when you finish, you will have a nice little generic home, with a generic kitchen and generic little swimming pool.

Just like the rest of the people who think they have "good taste".

Jesus dude, what the hell's your problem?

Mr. Assplorer I'm looking for something similar to this: http://www.officemax.com/max/soluti...xpansionOID=-536897596&prodBlockOID=537019344

Basically an L shaped corner desk with the computer workstation on the left with a cabinet for the computer, a filing drawer, and some cubby holes for my speakers... then the right side would have the regular flat desk with some accessory/utilty drawers, a writing pad, and some space for my printer and trays.

It's not for office use or even home office use. Just my personal desk to suit all of my needs and keep me comfortable. It's not worth $300 to me especially since anything I find in the store won't be IDEAL (even the one in the link... I'd rather have the computer monitor in the center of the workstation side as opposed to in the corner).

Shit... a wood stand for a large aquarium is dirt cheap if you build it yourself, so I figure I could do the same for a desk. It's not rocket science, I just don't know where to find the wood and I don't want a desk made out of plywood that will give me splinters every 5 minutes. =)

Matt,

If $2,800 were cheap for desks, then no homes would have any. I'm talking $300 for a desk that IS manufactured in bulk and does not require huge storage facilities because it comes in a tiny box stacked up in the back room at OfficeMax. If I could get a custom-made desk done to my exact specifications for $300 I'd jump at it.

-Warik

Good furniture will cost you. A friend of mine had a desk that ran well over $3,000, he had it right up to the point these movers he hired dropped it down a flight of stairs. Well it was actually more like 1 1/2 flights of stairs. That was when he found out they were not bonded. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to try and save money.

If you don't have any wood working skills, do like Vix. suggested, an auction. You can find some very nice stuff, that only needs to be refinished.

Oh yeah... and I knew that a thread of this nature couldn't have possibly reached 27 replies unless someone started a mini-flame war on it. Damn you all!

Perhaps you missed the prior parts of this thread? Or maybe all the times he has called me gay, a queen, or insults that relate to being anything other than I am, which is heterosexual.

Yet, I am still kind enough to answer his 9th grade computer questions.

You got a problem with that?

You make me laugh.

Jackass.

Warik, I couldn't access that page because I don't have the cookie that you have when browsing the site. Also, just for a simple desk, go to BrandMart USA.

$2800 was for a USED desk. with any custom build furniture, you are going to pay for what you get. Trust me on this. I am paying $6000 EACH for two chaise lounges to go in my new living room. Now I could run to Moderage or Baers or City Furniture and get chaise lounges for $500. But the difference is very obvious.

Sigh... stupid office max will give you an error if you try to access my link. Go to officemax.com and search for "20203726" to find that particular desk.

TheProject said:

His problem is actually very simple. He skipped Interior Design class when he was getting his Fag Card, instead concentrating more on Knee To Floor Positioning 101.

Now the silly queen is horrified to have discovered that he spent his money on something that is passe'. In other words.... his shit is out dated and he doesn't even have it in the house yet.

And not that I have a lisp, but if I did.... YOU would never hear it silly girl. Because I would have your face buried so far in the pillows, you wouldn't be able to hear anything. Except maybe my cursing when it was over and I noticed you left makeup and glitter smeared on my bed spread.

Adios... going to the gym. (which you should try sometimes)

And again... sorry in advance about your out dated kitchen. I mean... everything NEW is really just OLD again huh? Hopefully your friends will only talk about you behind your back and not laugh in your face.

Yes chief I know there's a big difference but it's for my room, not my house.

$12,000 for some lawn chairs is impressive and I'm sure they will/do look great, but paying 20x more than "good enough for me" is not my style.

Besides, I think I'd be a fun project to do myself. Just wish I knew where to buy the appropriate wood and how much it would cost.

-Warik

It says Session Interupted. I just need the cookie he has. I am going to train. Will be back shortly and look over it.

Also, another good place to look for cheap furniture is in the City Link and New Times weekly magazines. You get those in Miami? I think so.

But they often have simple furniture targeted towards college students. REasonably priced as well.

I would like to see some pictures of this kitchen in question.

Warik said:

Me too.. Because I honestly CAN NOT WAIT to see what his current scheme is like if he is replacing it with something already out of style. He must have polyester cabinets as well.

When I return from the gym, I will more than glady email someone pics of my kitchen to post. Just keep in mind with all the construction work, it is dusty and a mess. But you can still see what STYLE and CUTTING EDGE GOOD TASTE looks like.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention, but people call each other gay on here all the time. It's pretty common in this game of insult dodgeball we call Chat.

What bothers me is the obviously mean-spirited, bigoted shots that you're taking at him.

It's one thing to call someone gay as a joke, completely different to look down on someone because they're gay.

Boy, did you miss the boat. Perhaps you need a PROJECT manager.

The point I was making is this... Aside from all his childish insults, I still help the poor lad when his computer won't do what he wants.

Get it?

Were you asking if I had a problem with you helping him? No, I don't give two shits if you help him with his computer.

When you asked if I had a problem, I presumed that you were asking if I had a problem with the tone that you took in the post that I quoted.

THAT's the question I thought I was answering.

Two sissies slapping each other with feathers.
This argument is BORING.

Actually his so called "help" was nothing more than naming a program to use. He never helped with the access I needed to use the program. Also, it was another member (thank you) not him who actually went out of their way to custom design all the buttons anyway.

So, some "help".

I am still waiting on that pic of his kitchen. I am showering and going to lunch. When I return, I will post pics of what a REAL MAN'S kitchen looks like.

And the reason some of his replies seems so hateful is simply because he has not come to grips with his own latent homosexual desires.

Dr. Plorer, have you been able to find that desk at OfficeMax using that number I gave in the next post? Is it 90s or does it conform to the latest hip stylez?

HAHA, that's a good one.

Keep working on those insults.

And, if you need any more examples of Captain Colon Cleaners insults, just look through this thread. It's loaded with them.

Also, I have given him computer help many times, he's just not remembering.

And, finally, AAP claims to make 150K + per year and won't buy a $40 software package. Something stinks here and it aint me.

As I said, I won't pay for something I am only going to use once. Besides, stealing it is the American way.

And I do back up my claims on what I earn. Should I contact my accountant and get a copy of my income tax form and post it? If so, I will certainly do so on Monday.

I am still waiting for those kitchen pics.

I think the only thing that stinks is your sense of interior design. At least if you still have the receipts, you can take it all back and make a better selection.

Warik, I saw it, I am looking for a cheaper alternative now. I do believe some furniture stores advertise in the City Link that carries desks like that much cheaper. In the $199 range. Which I would suggest getting simply to save yourself some labor. Let me try to find them.

Warik, actually if you get the recessed groove for that desk included, it is a good bargain at the price. I would not worry about purchasing the wood and spending hours sanding it or staining and varnishing it.

But I will keep looking and see what I can find along that line.

AAP, has anyone told you to go jump in the lake today?

I am not going to enter in to a "my kitchen is better than yours" pissing contest. I am way to smooth for that. :D

I saw the pictures of your house one time and I like the designs I saw. Would I have it in my home, no, but that's my opinion. You are merely trying to berate me based on the fact that I don't like the way you flaunt your sexual orientation.

My sense of design and fashion is exactly where it should, well rooted in the HETEROSEXUAL modern world.

Thanks for playing, now please SHOO!

Whatever excuse you want to use for having a shitty sense of design.

And while we are on this thread.... where the hell are those pics? You got any advice for Warik? You think Warik started this thread because he was curious about your outdated 90's kitchen?

Stainless steel kitchen? wtf? This I have got to see.

Let's see your kitchen too AAP. BTW: What do you mean the "recessed groove" with that desk?

-Warik

The recessed groove is the cut-out in the middle where the two pieces join to make the "L" shape. Where your computer tower sits in front of you, but on a shelf beneath the general desk area.

They call it a Digital Dock on the website... here is the cut and paste description:

Intelligent Design's contemporary workcenter satisfies the needs of any home office or small office. The DIGITAL DOCK feature incorporated in this unit makes it even more functional. Access to your CPU is even easier, loading a CD is a breeze and connecting your wires is a snap. The monitor shelf can be removed to give you easy access to the CPU tower. The DIGITAL DOCK cutout in the desktop gives you free access to the front of your CPU making the connection of peripherals simple. Finished all the way around, this unit can float in the middle of a room as well as sit in the corner. All of the worksurfaces features scratch and stain resistant Armortop coating, making this unit last for years. Finished in Satin Cherry and Blackstone laminates. Ready to assemble.
DIGITAL DOCK "L" Workcenter: DIGITAL DOCK centralized CPU cabinet allows for easier interaction with the CPU. Raised, eye-level monitor shelf is removable for easy access to the CPU. Features an integrated cord management system and dual file drawers, both on full extension and ball bearing slides. Coordinates with matching lateral file, storage cabinet and bookcases. 35"h x 66 ¼"d x 66 ¼"w

It amuzes me how faggot boy says that stainless is so "90's" and maple (translation = light stained wood) is not in good taste.

Pick up a contemporary/modern furniture design magazine (recent copy) and what do you think is in 50% + of the featured kitchens?

You guess it, STAINLESS.

Warik, I have two handles left to replace in my kitchen (which require me to remove the brackets on the sink and lift it partially out of the basin to get to the screws... Something that Mr. Fudgepacker would need a shit-for-brains contractor to do for him so he doesn't break a nail) and I will have pic's of it.

No one has walked in to my kitchen and dissed me on it. Then again, I don't have any HOMOSEXUALS stepping foot in to my hacienda.

Actually I installed my entire kitchen. There is not one thing these contractors have done I could not do the only reason I went with them is because they promised it in three weeks and I thought why not write a check. Also, I did not have a scaffold for my 30' ceilings. Nor did I have a concrete cutter to remove a tress beam. The rest is nothing special.

Of course YOU look in design books. Guess you can't get your own ideas. Face the facts, stainless steel is out dated.

I, for one, can't wait to see this so called "kitchen". Post those pics up girly boy. I will post up pics of what a custom-designed-and-installed-by-a-fag kitchen looks like. Oh wait.... yours kitchen will be the same standard... I meant "a better one".

Of course, all this kitchen talk is blowing your so called Hetero cover.... cause everyone knows breeder men can't cook.... Just the fact you are lusing over new kitchen appliances says it all...

Once again, I am not going to enter into a pissing contest with you over kitchens.

I never said, "My kitchen is better than yours."

Everyone on this message board know what a cocky, assinine, dickwad you are.

Perhaps I should bring up a few of your threads to remind you?

Nah, I won't give you the time or effort. You're not worth it. You are merely here to be abrasive to others and entertain me.

What would the C&C @ EF be without the night time flame wars that have been transpiring as of late?

Yeah.... bring up those threads. I love reading my greatest work again.

I never said you stated "your kitchen is better than mine.." Of course you would not DARE do that. Even a fool knows his limits. I said "your kitchen is outdated." Of course I COULD have said my kitchen was better and not been wrong. But rather than hand you the shame... I merely suggested you get the program and with the times.......

And yes, I am extremely cocky, arrogant, assinine and I love it. I have reasons to be. And the only ones who think I am a dickwad (another homo reference... you really should have those latent desires examined) are those who's insecurities are boiled by my openess. This must be the abrasiveness you feel.

Cheerio, and I look forward to critiquing your pics when I return Sunday.

I like that digital dock except it might be a little noisier than the litttle side cabinet thing I have going now since the system will be more in the open... only thing that sucks is that the desk doesn't include the hutch that has the shelves and all the stuff and that's another $100... eek.

I'm going to check out the stores themselves this weekend and see if I find something I like. In the mean time, show me some kitchens.

-Warik

Well, here's my take as someone who works in commercial lumber. Barring you wanting a piece of CDX plywood stacked on cinder blocks, the wood required to build a desk could easily hit the 300 mark assuming you were using something like oak/maple. I suppose you could buy a big piece of pine or hemlock, but still- a piece that size and thickness would be pricy. I haven't a clue where you could find that pre-sanded/stained. If you have sanding equiptment at home you could easily handle that-- unless you wanted routing done on the edges. My bf built my ferret kennel (it's a big oak cabinet with 3 levels and french doors). For the wood and hardware alone it was $275. Throw in 30 hours of free labor and that my dear, is still expensive.

Millwork and furniture are quite pricey (unless you get complete crap). You might want to check out the classified section of your local paper. They might have some deals. ;)
