I have OPS, AJ x 3, AJT (which arrived yesterday) x 1 ... gonna have to top it with something.

I still have about 3/4 tin of #16, maybe I'll give that another shot with #425.

If that doesn't work I'll order 1000P.

Screw PMs, DG -- let other peeps learn. No reason to be embarassed.

I have to bill you if you want one-on-one help, as a matter of principle.

You got a "dock" with big icons; the compass is Safari, that's your web browser. The postage stamp is Mail.

The white one that looks like a light switch is "System Preferences." That's how you get onto the network, among other things.

What else do you do when you're on a PC?

Sorry can't help on this one. I've always built for myself, friends and family, window's based machines. Truthfully, I've never even seen a mac up close in real life.

You should know :rainbow:

I have a very extensive porn collection, all catigorized, redheads, asian, sperm swaping, dp etc. However I do not have any gay porn except lesbian stuff. I would say the largest segment of my collection is women getting cummed inside, as I have a bit of a creampie fetish. There is absolutely nothing as hot as blowing your load inside of a woman then watching it drip out, other than watching another woman lick it clean or her letting it drip into a glass then drinking it. OMG...be right back got to take care of some bidness...

o damn sorry had to go tot he the gym, i have the basics down with the icons, It took me about 45 minutes to log onto my wireless network but now that is over I am happy.

My biggest issue is I can not use napster or listen to streaming video from a website like amazon. That is all i have niticed so far. i purchased the .mac thing which is cool, but that alteast has a manual

I am questing if i just wasted 3,500 bux

i have the macbook pro if it matters

whats a mac?

I downloaded like 60 gigs of porn within a couple weeks.

dg, you mac should have dvd software built in for watching movies :)

click on the hard drive icon on the desktop and go into the Applications folder. All the good stuff is there :)

What in your eyes are the pros and cons of mac?

why is it collecting dust?

The thing that makes macs unique is their ability to run OS X the Apple operating system instead of just Windows the Microsoft one. Yes the new macs can also run Windows too, but you have to buy the license seperately. However PCs cannot run OS X at all due to licensing issues.

OS X has been described by many to be more intuitive, simple, secure, prettier, etc. Also, they don't really have any issues with spyware or viruses. But a good PC user wont have to deal with that either, if they use common sense :) Downsides to OS X are that not as many computer games are made for it, and many unique programs only run on windows (but you can run windows on a mac if you dont mind paying $100-300 for an extra license)

Hardware wise, macs and pcs are very similar nowadays, except with prices. Since only Apple designs mac system boards (monopoly), systems and parts are very expensive. Of course if you get a 3 warranty for the computer that wont matter. Macs also tend to be more stylish looking, compact, etc.
Their macbooks are pretty thin as you are aware.

But the people who like Mac OS X don't mind paying the extra bucks for the computer, cuz they like the interface so much. You sort of have to try it and see which one you like better Mac OS X or Windows. Then decide if you think spending the extra money for the mac is worth it.

why is it collecting dust?

My mac is old. I got it for free. It runs the latest mac software, but its slow. My PC is much faster and cheaper to upgrade and maintain. Also I like to run a variety of software programs, many which arent made for mac. Also I like the Windows interface and dont see a reason to switch to the Mac OS X interface :)

oh, and if you are going to return your mac, dont wait too long, because notebooks tend to have a very short return policy (like 14 days) :)

My Macbook (not Pro) runs XP faster than my desktop. I don't know whether to laugh or cry... but I'm sorely tempted to go all-Apple and simplify my workspace a LOT. Parallels Desktop is the shiznat.

I'm not deeply in love with the OS X interface, but I like that it's on top of a Unix kernel and not hacked together the way Linux is. Best design people in the business, hands down. I swear, Microsoft hired their design team from Ringling Bros.

One thing about Apple only allowing OS X to run on Apple hardware -- that means they don't have to support every random piece of shite that comes out of China, the way Windows does. Makes everything a lot tighter.

Heard a rumor once that Apple has a sweetheart deal with every producer of LCD screens. Apple gets the perfect ones, everyone else gets the leftovers. :D

build yourself a core 2 duo system and laugh at apple hardware.

Apple's new powermacs ARE essentially Core 2 duo systems, they are Intel Xeons! Blazing fast too. But expensive!

I think Apple has a LOT of potential in the computer market. The design people and engineers at Apple are geniuses. OS X is great and fun to use. If they were willing to have more products and compete more in the lower priced computer market, I think they could do a lot better. And overall I think their pricing needs to become more competitive with PCs if they ever want to expand their market share.

You'll soon get used to the OS X interface over the Windows one.

If you don't like Safari, consider downloading Opera or Firefox. They operate basically the same as on Windows or Linux. If you're accustomed to IE then it's way past time that you switched, anyway.

I switched in 2002 after deciding that XP was a step beyond the red line and, nowadays, Windows just seems clumsy on the occasions I have to use it. You'll sometimes find that there's the odd program you want to use that only runs under Windows but your new MacBook will run either Windows in a window or, using BootCamp, can be made to boot up into Windows. If you boot into Windows then your machine is just a PC and you'd have to reboot to get OS X back again.

Here's a link to the mac/pc ads. They're worth a chuckle.

Their pricing is, I believe, competetive with PCs. It's really just that Apple doesn't cater to the bottom-end budget buyer. Once you start trying to match features with the Apple machines you soon conclude that if the machine has want you want then there's no need to look further.

I'm hoping that when the word gets out about Vista, Microsoft is finally going to crash and burn.... look up "tilt bits" as a quoted string.

At this stage, the silent, remote revocaton aspects of Vista, even to the extent of not allowing you to boot up should they wish, are perplexing. It's hard to see any explanation other than that MSoft does now think that it controls the microcomputer market utterly.

Apple probably is, currently, the only avenue of escape for most users who won't or can't make the leap to one of the many *n?x flavours.

What I'm saying is that they need to cater more to the bottom end market buyer! Many people don't need fancy computers, which is why they simply buy a dell or an emachine for $500 (display and computer). Right now Apple doesnt have anything that can compete with that.

The only offering Apple has for the lower market is their mac mini, which isnt very upgradable or expandable. Plus display, keyboard, and mouse arent included.

And sure for the rest of apple's models pricing might be considered "competitive", if you glorify OS X and whatever bells and whistles apple gives you with their computers (small designs, magnetic power adapters, built in I-cameras, bluetooth, etc.) But, many people don't want all that extra crap. It's like trying to sell a car with a bunch of extra options included that the consumer doesnt need, and with a price tag the gets higher with those options.

Apple's cater to Emos. Just look at their advertising campaign.

pretty much means you're a fag if you use one.

yeah, a lot of things piss me off about vista. and that is definately one of them. microsoft is basically opening the door for everyone to start using DRM and paranoid studio protection practices which will cripple functionality for the end user.

I really hope that vista flops and that microsoft either changes their business practices or that a better operating system becomes more common on PCs.

Vista needs to be leaned out significantly

the hardware usage is too much, you need a high end graphics card just to run it. Too much bullshit protection.

At this point there's not too much of a reason for people to migrate from XP to vista.

well i have been using the laptop alot last night, I mean it is a nice piece it is fast but this is my problem. Although i work with computers everyday I am not used to using the mac. I have a program that I purchased that I can go to classes and learn how to use all the features that it comes with BUT the freaking place is a hour away and the classes are in 1hr intervals. that for me is a problem.

My main problem is most of the features are only for macs, so yeah i can talk to people online with a cam, so what i can only talk to mac users and i dont know any

Last but not least is the napster issue, i cant DL it! it is not compatible for mac.

I have to say it does look nice tho, lol

i also went on gateway and built a laptop and it was 500 bux cheaper and it has a HD drive

other than the fact that microsoft will eventually stop supporting XP :(

Then people will be forced to upgrade. Also, gamers will get vista so that they can run directx10 to play all the new games. directx10 wont be available for XP :(

But those things are off in the future, so you're right, at this point there's isn't a need to upgrade yet.

macs are pretty easy to get the hang of, after you use them for awhile. the biggest thing, which you hinted at, is making sure you can run all your software on the mac that you want to run. Either that or you have to buy Windows for your mac, which is an added expense.
I'm sure there's an application you can use to talk with your cam online to people who have PCs as well. I havent looked into that much.

And it doesnt surprise me that the gateway is that much cheaper!

Download Skype. It does everything you'd want for online chatting with or without video.

I can sympathize with the alien feel of a new OS. All I can offer is that if you stick with it for a couple of days you'll get used to it. If you can't get used to it then I guess you have to walk away.

Digger mentioned Parallels. It's a program to allow you to run Windows in a window. It might be a solution to your Napster requiements. Limewire is available for OS X.

You can definitely spec out cheaper laptops. Once you're looking at high-end kit, though, it gets to be a lot harder. No riff-raff on the Mac. ;)

Getting used to a new OS usually takes longer than a couple days, lol, but i see what you're saying. After about a month of consistently using my mac, just to try it out, there were still things i wasnt used to that i was upset about. A new OS is a significant change, and one of the reasons why I havent gotten into Linux (and there are so many varieties and flavors of linux too)

Well I am busy the next couple of days so i will not return it till this weekend. I will use it as much as possible during that time and make my decision then.

thanx for all your help guys!

That included iChat program can use AIM instead of mac.com, DG.

Strange, I was up and running within a couple of days and never looked back. Obviously, I didn't have full knowledge of all available features by then (and certainly don't now either :) ) but I was very comfortable with OS X. I had used Linux for quite a while before that, though, so the tree-based directory structure wasn't at all alien to me.

Here's a few shortcuts that might help:

If you open a Finder window (OS X's eqiuvalent of Explorer)
cmd-shift-h will take you to your Home directory
cmd-shift-a will take you to your Applications directory
cmd-shift-u - Utilities directory
cmd-i - info on a file or directory
cmd-a - select all, this also works in editors and other places

cmd is the key with the Apple symbol on it

It ran out and they didn't make me a mod so I'm sulking. Unbelievably, another member offered to gift me a lifetime Plat, for which I'm still gob-smacked, but my sulking won out. :)
