Any Social workers here

as you may or may not know ive just got into this field coming from a more law geared background, I have alot of transferable skills but dealing with kids is a completely different world and I would like to read any books you guys can think of about handling conflicts etc with kids or in a group home environment,or crisis intervention.

thanks guys

Yup. Been out of the field for awhile and don't recall that I really read any books on that topic. That was my specialty: In-patient behavior-mod in children and adolescents.

thats cool,im not even sure there are any books out there.

they have counsellors and stuff ,basically we supervise, try and help them make better choices ,learn from their mistakes and such,id just like to be on the ball for crisis situations,ie self harm, aggeression and maybe different approaches to take when dealing with kids,im use to dealing with adults and that approach is totally different

ya thats what ive been seeing, the other staff have been pretty helpful but we all have a different approach so i just kind of take what they do and add my twist to it.

lol prob social disease, but if infact someone trust her to guide some poor unfortunate soul i hope she pops in here

I use to be in the field. The nameless social worker is basically all the stereotypical stuff you will see or hear from society in and out of the field. A great read from a woman who has many years of experience in the field

I worked in Substance abuse .....mainly jail and court orderd treatment

I did the jail substance abuse counseling for a year. In the state I am in any one that has EVER been convicted of a crime with drug or alcohol involved is required to pass a substance abuse counseling class or get the A-OKay from a licensed counselor. I was the only one at this high security prison and it was quite the job. You get zero respect and it was quite dangerous. I got paid a little more being in a high security prison. Also the majority of the other counselor's that i graduated with were women so they didn't want to go to a male prison so I got the job hands down.

It is an experience and a job you have to be mentally and physically ready for. I was jumped a couple times but nothing serious. I can hold my own until the cops come in and taser the shit out of the guys

i cant imagine working around some miserable fucks. that will chip away at you over time id imagine

thats y i quit. The job isn't like a light switch. I would be on guard 8-10 hours a day and when I'd go home I would still b on guard, snappy and rude to people like I was at work. It took its toll on me and my relationships

i hate being on guard, that will DEF mold into your life, your agressive to everyone

I was actually on a 750mg cycle of test too during that time. I was pretty aggressive!

slaughterhouse five by Kurt Vonnegut, great for children,

The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy

Standing Alone in Mecca, Asra Q. Nomani

The Shining, by Stephen King.

Wonderful books for small and younger children

I'd probably be in there with them now! I had a guy that only talked about fucking my sister when he was around me, which is odd b/c I'm an only child but he got off to telling me how hard he fucked my sister

what a deusch bag!

some people can tolerate abuse well apparently and work in that enviroment

don't expect it to be overly rewarding. remember, you're trying to unfuck damaged goods. long tough road. don't expect any appreciation that isn't self given. but you will be further enriched. if that kind of shit matters to you. the way i think of it is being like a farmer, planting seeds. you never know what you might harvest....

I think smurf is a social worker.

Or maybe she just has a social disease.
That'll be 12 demerits for you, for insubordination.

Oak, I didnt know you were in the social work field now. cool. I worked for a Child Welfare Agency for over 12 years but I never actually worked in a Group Home. We had several group homes for wards of the state and other kids who were put there by the courts, etc. I worked in Foster Care doing everything from case management to managing the division to balancing and maintaining the budget to licensing the foster homes. Basically I ran shit. I wonder how they;re functioning without me?

anywho. yeah Im not familiar with any particular books on the subject but I bet a search on the interwebs would give you LOTS of good resources. I actually wrote a book on working with kids in these situations and here's an excerpt:

"Don't do what's convenient, do what's right. Set clear limits and boundaries and be consistent."

There.

Also there was another member (forget his name) wh oused to frequent C&C and he and his wife had been running a group home for kids in a state down south and he seemed really pretty knowledgeable too. crap what was his name?

thanks for the tips smurf, things have been going good so far,ill feel a little better once i get more training from them

I never had any problems in the jail....although I hated seeing people outside of work .....However I was only in the county jail....I would go back I loved it

ya I was in a high security prison. I dealt with a lot of normal people that clearly had changed due to prison and some guys that were beyond fucked up in the head. 95% of my clients did not feel they needed to be there. The guys that did accept their punishment were the ones that I signed out the quickest
