Any of you use Bluetooth?

mountain muscle said:
I am looking for something portable for use at home and one I can take on the road for work.
Found some usb devices to enable the computer for Bluetooth. Any of you have experiences with these?

Such as: BT007X Bluetooth® USB Adapter

Just looking for some input on this or suggestions for what to use.

Can't help here but you need to go look in the outdoorsman forum. BIATCH.

BTW- I have a razr and think it's great for the oilfield, in reference to your other tech thread.

Cheers,

I've used BT USB dongles to link to my phones. These days they're all pretty generic. I've not used that particular brand but there's no reason to expect any problems with it. The last one I bought was about as Brand X as you could get and it worked just fine both on PC and on Mac.

Thanks Blut, I am still learning about Bluetooth crap but I will grab one and give it a shot, just wanted to know if anyone had big problems with them.

Bluetooth uses are pretty limited but think of it as a short-range wireless connection between the two devices. Almost all of my early use was to use my phone as a modem for my laptop when I was on the road. I could just open up my laptop and get onto the internet so long as my phone was somewhere nearby. You can do the same with most PDAs.

These days I send and receive my texts on the computer and transfer files to the phone, synchronize my address book and calendar. With the HID facility I can debug my software directly on the phone without going through an emulator from the PC. You can transfer files between two phones through Bluetooth.

One thing to consider is that, increasingly, phones are being crippled by service providers to force you to acquire all of your content solely over the air through their services. Address book and contacts should still work but you may be unable to transfer images, videos, ringtones and music to your phone simply because they want you to buy from them and have crippled the phone.

On the purely computer side. Bluetooth is a bit gimmicky. Some people like the idea of removing cables from their desktop and have Bluetooth mouse, keyboard and printer. I'm happy with cables and see it as one less thing to go wrong. A powerful cordless phone nearby can interfere with the Bluetooth transmission.
